Mary Katherine Gallagher grows up as an earnest dreamer with a comic, if unconventional, sparkle. As a child, she saves a boy with a distinctive birthmark at a public pool, an act that marks the first of many quests for fame, a first kiss, and a sense that her life could be something more than ordinary. She lives with her grandmother and nurtures a growing obsession with becoming a star, steering her heart toward the possibility that Hollywood awaits.

In high school at St. Monica’s, the dream intensifies but so does the collision with reality. Mary longs for a kiss from Sky Corrigan, the most popular boy in school, yet her awkward manner and outcast status keep her on the margins. A moment of tree-kissing embarrassment lands her in special education, where she forges a surprising friendship with Helen Lewengrub. A new, rough-edged student, Eric Slater, notices her, adding a dynamic that blends attraction with danger.

A school talent show is announced, offering a dreamlike prize: a trip to Hollywood and a chance to become a movie extra. Mary’s grandmother initially forbids participation, but Helen and a vision of Jesus push her to audition anyway, suggesting a higher purpose beyond personal glory. When Mary tries to sign up, she ends up in a confrontation with Evian Graham, the head cheerleader and Sky’s girlfriend. In a dark family reveal, Mary learns the true reason her grandmother won’t let her perform — Mary’s parents were killed during an Irish stepdance competition — a secret that casts a long shadow over the girl’s ambitions.

The conflict escalates as Sky abruptly ends things with Evian after witnessing the fight, and Evian vows revenge on Mary. Undeterred, Mary auditions and delivers a powerful, heartfelt performance of Sometimes When We Touch. The moment is spoiled when Evian dumps a bucket of paint on Mary, a brutal echo of Carrie’s shame, and she flees the school with Slater. The camera shifts to a tender twist when Slater reveals that he was the boy Mary saved years earlier; the two bond during an improvised swim by the pool, a quiet dawn of trust between two unlikely allies.

Back home, Mary discovers that she has earned a place in the talent show. Her grandmother, now moved by what she senses in Mary’s spirit, reluctantly agrees to let her participate and even helps coach her, assembling a chorus line drawn from Mary’s special education classmates. The stage is set for a pivotal moment of self-definition: Evian apologizes and reveals that she and Sky will share the dance, but Mary resolves to perform not to impress Sky, but for herself. In a moment of vulnerability, she admits that her dream may not come true in the way she expected; she sacrifices the sheer star fantasy to focus on surviving the moment for her grandmother’s sake.

The talent show sequence becomes a test of character and community. Mary and her friends perform to Out Here on My Own, with Slater arriving at the last second to witness. A misstep by the record player speeds up the tempo and complicates the routine, but the spirit of the performance endures. Mary falls, echoing the tragedy of her parents’ death, yet with a moment of quiet encouragement from a vision of Jesus, she finds the strength to guide her group through the finale. The crowd erupts in a standing ovation, and Mary’s talent finally earns her triumph.

In the final moments, Sky kisses Mary, but she rejects the notion of a romance rooted in popularity and instead shares a kiss with Slater, celebrating a deeper connection forged through shared vulnerability and resilience. The film closes on a note of hopeful independence: Mary, now dating Slater, bids a symbolic farewell to the dream she once chased by kissing the tree she once climbed to reach it — a quiet goodbye to the past and a hello to a future built with friends, courage, and a sense of self.
