A new supermarket, Bargains Galore, opens with a bold promise of rock-bottom prices, and its emergence immediately casts a shadow over the long-standing, homegrown favorite, Honest Goro. The owner of Honest Goro, Goro, Masahiko Tsugawa peers out from the store’s doors to size up a rival that wields aggressive price cutting as its weapon. In the midst of this friction, he runs into an old classmate, Hanako Inoue, Nobuko Miyamoto, sparking a chance reunion that will change the course of both their lives. Hanako brings with her a practical, housewife’s know-how that she believes can explain why Honest Goro is slipping behind the newcomer.

With Hanako aboard as head cashier, the pace of change at Honest Goro quickens. She introduces fresh approaches to customer service and rolls out new sales techniques, all anchored by a firm policy of selling only fresh food. The atmosphere on the shop floor shifts as the aisles become more pleasant, the staff interact with customers more attentively, and shopping becomes a more satisfying experience. Yet not everyone is ready to embrace these changes. A segment of senior staff bristles at the new methods and clings to the old ways, resisting the evolving routines and standards.

Despite the internal friction, Honest Goro begins to win back and attract more customers, slowly narrowing the gap with Bargains Galore. Meanwhile, a separate shadow looms: the manager of Honest Goro starts accepting bribes from Bargains Galore, a corrupt arrangement that corrupts trust and threatens the store’s future. Eventually, this manager resigns to jump to the rival, attempting to hoist the rest of the staff with him. In the face of this betrayal, Hanako delivers an impassioned speech that resonates with the team, and the majority decide to remain loyal to Goro, choosing to redouble their efforts to deliver genuine customer satisfaction.

Desperation peaks as a last-ditch sabotage attempt unfolds: the old manager teams up with the head butcher to steal all the store’s meat. Hanako uncovers the plot, and in a tense moment is locked inside the back of their freezer van as they speed away. Goro vaults into action, pursuing them in a dekotora, and after a perilous, high-speed chase, Hanako is ultimately saved. The showdown leaves Honest Goro strengthened by loyalty and resolve.

The film closes with Honest Goro opening on New Year’s Day to a store bustling with customers, a testament to renewed faith and service, while Bargains Galore stands mostly empty, its aggressive tactics overridden by a renewed commitment to quality, care, and community.
