Kate Hayden, Cristina Raines, is a young pregnant divorcee who falls in love with the struggling musician Sam Hayden, Cliff DeYoung, and the two marry. A few months into their marriage, they welcome their daughter Jill, Sidney Greenbush. Jill’s biological father is Kate’s former husband, Alan Fudge, who plays David, and while David isn’t in the daily life of the new family, Sam loves Jill and treats her as his own.

Shortly after Jill is born, Kate receives the shocking diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. The prognosis forces a stark choice: she can either have her leg amputated to try to halt the spread of the disease or undergo chemotherapy. Kate is reluctant to lose her leg, so she initially chooses chemotherapy, which leaves her very ill and unable to function day to day or care for Jill. After experiencing severe treatment side effects, she decides to forgo further medical intervention and concentrates on being a wife to Sam and a mother to Jill in the limited time she has left, hoping to make every moment count.

As her health declines, Kate agrees to participate in a medical research study by keeping a recorded journal that describes her feelings about being a young wife and mother facing an early death. For a while, her candid entries travel beyond the hospital walls, and a stolen tape recorder becomes a catalyst that draws national attention to her personal story. When she receives a replacement recorder, she continues her intimate journal, preserving a chronicle of her thoughts, fears, hopes, and love. Her voice documents the evolving dynamics of her marriage, the bond with Jill, and the quiet, unwavering devotion to family as life moves toward its end. The film closes on the intimate, human truth of a woman who chooses honesty and presence in the face of a terminal illness, leaving behind a recorded testament of memory, love, and resilience.
