On the remote island of Little Tall in Maine, a community faced a terrifying ordeal during a brutal blizzard in 1989. The story begins with the brutal murder of Martha Clarendon, an elderly resident, by a mysterious and menacing stranger whose presence immediately unsettles the townspeople. The town’s Town Manager Robbie Beals quickly starts investigating, but he is haunted when the stranger, who identifies himself as André Linoge, reveals disturbing knowledge of the darkest secrets of the island’s residents. Linoge seems to have an uncanny ability to know everyone’s names and hidden sins, which deeply unsettles the community, especially Mike Anderson, a supermarket manager and part-time constable, who promptly arrests Linoge. The stranger’s demand is chilling: he simply says, “Give me what I want, and I’ll go away,” hinting at some ominous motive while offering no clues about his own origins.
As Linoge is detained in jail, he begins to exert a sinister influence over the townspeople, possessing their minds and fueling a series of tragic events that include suicides and a murder. In a dramatic escape, Linoge transforms into a wizened old man, once again demanding something from the terrified community before vanishing into the raging storm. The residents gather in the town hall, seeking shelter from the deadly blizzard, but Linoge’s presence continues to sow chaos, appearing on televisions as a televangelist who warns of dire consequences if the town refuses to comply with his demands.
Meanwhile, unsettling dreams haunt the townspeople—visions of the island deserted after the storm and a strange word, “Croaton,” carved into a tree, linking the events to the mysterious disappearance of the lost Roanoke colony. Mike Anderson dreams that everyone on the island walks into the ocean and drowns. The horrors escalate when Linoge causes three residents to vanish in front of witnesses while everyone observes the collapse of the lighthouse. Two of the victims are killed, and a third, Angie Carver, is found aged and fragile, raising the stakes of the terror. The most heartbreaking moment comes when Ralphie, Johnny Harriman, and other children fall under a deadly spell, dreaming they are flying through clouds with Linoge, blurring the line between nightmare and reality.
As the chaos intensifies, Mike discovers Linoge held a resident hostage inside the town hall, amused by the panic he’s incited. Linoge, who claims to have lived for thousands of years, reveals that he’s sick and wants to take a child—Ralphie—for himself, to raise as a magic-using sorcerer like him. Although he cannot forcibly take a child, he warns that the dreams shared by the residents will come true if they fail to comply, leaving them in a perilous moral dilemma. The town is summoned to a meeting, and Linoge presides over a disturbing lottery to choose who will sacrifice Ralphie. Despite Mike’s pleas to stand against Linoge, the town’s people, including his wife Molly, decide to give in, overwhelmed by fear and despair.
In a heartbreaking climax, the townspeople choose Ralphie, and Linoge, once again in his warlock form, cynically thanks them. He warns them never to speak of these events again, then walks out holding Ralphie in his arms before flying away into the stormy night. Mike, devastated, kneels in the snow, desperate and pleading for his son back, as the community is forever changed by the ordeal.
The story concludes with Mike leaving Little Tall after his marriage to Molly ends—she divorces him and later marries Hatch, the new constable on the island who was once Mike’s deputy. Several residents are haunted by guilt and face tragic ends. The lingering darkness of Linoge’s evil persists, and in a haunting epilogue, Linoge and Ralphie are seen passing through Chinatown, Ralphie now corrupted and evil. Mike, having witnessed this horror, considers revealing the truth to Molly but ultimately accepts that some secrets are too terrible to share, and not all truths should be exposed.
