On the frozen shoreline of northern Sakhalin Island, the Nyvkh rely on seal hunting and fishing to survive. The film offers a stark, documentary‑style look at their homes, animistic rituals and daily life, though it is a scripted picture with special effects, based on Chingiz Aitmatov’s novella “Spotted Dog Running at the Edge of the Sea.” The title names the harsh landscape the Nyvkh have domesticated, celebrated in myth and “poetry of the concrete.”
