Spooky House 2002

Alexander York, known as The Great Zamboni, is a famous illusionist who works with his wife and assistant, Dawn Starr. During a recording session of one of his shows, something goes wrong during the act, and Dawn Starr disappears.

Eleven and a half years later, Zamboni lives alone in an old manor, sharing the space with his pet jaguar Shadow. He leans into a mysterious, almost theatrical persona, using tricks and traps to keep visitors at bay and cultivating a chilling reputation as the Spooky Man in the town surrounding the Spooky House. The atmosphere is quiet, but not empty, as the residents drift between curiosity and fear whenever the lights flicker at the edge of the property.

Nearby, a recently orphaned boy named Max and his circle of friends—Yuri, Beans, Prescott, and Zoe—try to squeeze a bit of Halloween fun before Max transitions to an orphanage. Their world intersects with a trio of teenage bullies—Mona, Mike the Mouth, and Dumb Dave—who are being groomed by the ruthless Madame Boss to become real thieves. The dynamics between the kids and the bullies grow tense, especially as the thefts and scares escalate around the neighborhood.

The mischief intensifies when the teens steal Zoe’s pet goat Princess and stash her in a graveyard near the Spooky House, forcing the children to confront both the adults and the dangers of the unfamiliar old manor. Zamboni, catching sight of the youngsters, organizes a sequence of traps and tricks to deter intruders, yet Max remains fearless and increasingly intrigued by the enigmatic illusionist. What starts as suspicion slowly curdles into a cautious curiosity as Max begins visiting Zamboni, who reluctantly allows the boy into his world and into conversations that reveal layers behind the legend.

While the kids dig into Zamboni’s past, they uncover a chilling detail: the last thing he ever said to Dawn Starr before her disappearance was “I hate children.” > I hate children.

When Max endures torment from the bullies, who steal a wand he received from Zamboni and wreck his bicycle, he returns to the mansion seeking help. Zamboni crafts a plan: the kids will reclaim what was taken, lure the thieves to his house, and—with the help of elaborate traps and Shadow’s presence—foil Madame Boss’s scheme and expose the crime ring.

Halloween night arrives with a rush of danger and cleverness. The children break into Madame Boss’s shop to retrieve Princess and uncover a meeting between the shop’s owner and the teens. Zoe recognizes Princess by her bleats, and Max steals back the wand, but the noise draws the wrong sort of attention. The criminals flee toward the graveyard and then into the house, forcing a tense chase and a series of traps that keep the kids safe and disorient the intruders. Madame Boss arrives with a plan of her own, but Zamboni’s improvised defense—combined with Shadow’s eerie presence—puts a brake on the danger while one of the children signals the police.

The authorities arrive to arrest the culprits, and the children celebrate the Halloween night together with Zamboni. Soon after, Max is taken by his adoptive parents, though he grows restless and ultimately returns to the orphanage, missing the sense of family he found in the old house.

Time passes, and Zamboni returns to the stage to host a show for the orphanage. He brings Max onstage as a volunteer for a trick in which he and Shadow switch places, and he uses the moment to publicly announce that he has adopted Max, embracing the idea of a true family. In a final twist of magic, Shadow transforms back into Dawn Starr, who had become a jaguar when she disappeared so many years before. The reunion is warm and hopeful, and Zamboni, Dawn Starr, and Max set out together as a new, hopeful family—bound by magic, trust, and second chances.
