Spike Fumo, Sasha Mitchell, is a young Italian-American aspiring to be a boxer who hails from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He hopes to catch the eye of the local mob boss, Baldo Cacetti, so that he might become his sponsor. But Baldo, a wary fixer of reputations, knows Spike’s career is built on fixed matches and refuses to back him. Spike reminds Baldo that his father wound up in prison for working for him, which pushes Baldo to offer a different (and shady) job: collect money for his numbers racket instead.

Spike’s path crosses Angel, the daughter of Baldo, when she shows up at one of Spike’s bouts with her boyfriend, Justin. Angel longs for Spike, but Baldo is clear: he views Justin—a college student and the son of a congresswoman—as a more suitable, upwardly mobile match for Angel. He orders Spike to leave Bensonhurst, even though Angel’s heart pulls in the other direction. Angel’s desires clash with Baldo’s plans, and Spike finds himself forced to choose between love and loyalty.

A new chapter unfolds in Red Hook, a neighborhood where Spike ends up after Baldo’s orders. Bandana, a boxing friend, invites him to live at his apartment in a building that is slowly succumbing to neglect. Spike’s presence unsettles the common troublemakers, and he earns Bandana’s mother’s gratitude by helping to keep the place safe. It is there that Spike meets Bandana’s teenage daughter, India, and a quiet romance begins amid the surrounding decay. Spike trains with Bandana at the local gym, and his bond with India deepens, offering him a sense of belonging he hadn’t felt before.

The plot thickens when Frankie, Spike’s old boxing ally, arrives with Angel—who is pregnant. Angel reveals that her father still strongly opposes their relationship. Simultaneously, Spike discovers that India is also pregnant, deepening the stakes and the emotional pull between loyalties, love, and the inevitable pull of family obligations. Frankie, [Rodney Harvey], becomes an unwitting messenger of these tangled loyalties, while Angel [Maria Pitillo] and India become testament to the different paths Spike could take.

Back in Bensonhurst, Angel presses her case with Baldo, who ultimately concedes and arranges for Spike to win a fixed match in his old neighborhood. Spike considers this fixed victory his ticket back to Bensonhurst, to marry Angel, and to rejoin the life he thinks he wants. He tells India that, despite his love for her, he cannot stay away from his old environment and responsibilities and briefly returns to his previous surroundings. Yet this plan is upended when Baldo’s world collides with Spike’s: he discovers his wife, Sylvia, asleep in bed with Spike—a misunderstanding born from a night of cards rather than romance—and orders Spike to lose the fight.

Driven by pride and defiance, Spike refuses to throw the match and delivers a stunning first-round knockout. The night culminates in a tense banquet hall moment where Angel arrives with Justin. Baldo’s men seize Spike and haul him to the kitchen, while Angel pleads with her father, insisting she does not want Spike dead but does not want him to marry anyone else either. Baldo spares Spike’s life but breaks his right hand as punishment. Angel ultimately marries Justin and gives birth to Spike’s son, while Spike’s life takes a new shape back in Red Hook.

Yet the story doesn’t end there. Spike returns to Red Hook and ultimately marries India, beginning a new chapter as a police officer who searches for a different kind of justice. Baldo, now reconciled to Spike in his own way, even takes his grandson to visit Spike, India, and their growing family, signaling a fragile but hopeful closure to a saga of ambition, love, and the hard-edged choices that define it.
