Slumber Reviews & Ratings
IMDb users rate Slumber 4.7/10. Our Echo Score gives it 29/100, strongest in character & emotion (40) and weakest in rewatch factor (20).
Slumber Echo Score Breakdown
Slumber struggles to deliver a cohesive horror experience, falling short in multiple areas. Critics and viewers alike note its predictable plotting, uneven pacing, and uninspired craft elements, while occasional moments of visual interest fail to compensate for routine scares and a convoluted climax. The film’s characters receive minimal development, and its attempts at psychological dread lack sufficient depth or novelty. Ultimately, Slumber feels forgettable, offering little incentive for repeat viewings.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 30
In terms of direction and technical craft, Slumber exhibits uninspired choices and uneven execution. Reviewers highlight its predictable shot composition, routine editing that undermines tension, and an over-the-top climax with awkward visual transitions. There is little evidence of distinctive cinematography or production design to elevate the material. Overall, the film’s craft limits its ability to engage audiences visually.
- Character & Emotion 40
When it comes to character development and performances, Slumber offers limited depth or emotional resonance. The central ensemble delivers serviceable but unremarkable portrayals that fail to build strong connections. Character motivations remain underexplored, and fleeting chemistry leaves little impact. Consequently, the emotional stakes are low and do not foster significant audience investment by the end of the film.
- Story & Flow 25
In terms of narrative structure and pacing, Slumber is marked by predictability and disjointed progression. Initial tension builds modestly but is undermined by repetitive jump scares and a meandering middle section. The plot’s reliance on familiar tropes and a convoluted climax further detracts from coherence. As a result, the story lacks sustained engagement and originality.
- Sensory Experience 30
When evaluating the sensory elements, Slumber presents unremarkable audio and visual design with few memorable moments. The soundtrack and sound effects provide basic atmosphere but do not elevate the tension, while visual choices oscillate between serviceable and inadvertently campy. There is a lack of cohesive style in lighting and color grading. Overall, the sensory experience fails to leave a lasting impression.
- Rewatch Factor 20
In terms of replay value, Slumber offers little incentive for repeat viewings. Its familiar story beats and absence of nuanced character moments make revisiting the film feel redundant. The third-act’s convoluted resolution and uneven pacing further diminish its appeal after the first watch. Overall, the movie lacks the depth or novelty to sustain lasting interest.

Spoilers ahead
Dr. Alice Arnolds, Maggie Q, is a renowned sleep therapist and neurologist, whose calm, clinical exterior hides a traumatic memory from childhood: her younger brother died under mysterious circumstances while sleepwalking, found at the base of the stairs with his eyes wide open in terror. Though his death was ruled an accident, she has never fully accepted that explanation, and the fear has lingered like a shadow she can neither shake nor explain.
Now an adult, she works at the Whittingham Sleep Clinic, where she conducts overnight studies on patients suffering from parasomnias. She remains fiercely analytical, skeptical of anything that isn’t grounded in science, and she prides herself on maintaining professional detachment even when the cases brush up against the unnerving boundary of the unknown.
