Two orphans, Shekhar Malhotra and Amit Malhotra, grow up with a deep, resilient bond as they pursue distinct paths: Shekhar becomes a squadron leader in the Indian Air Force, while Amit writes plays in Delhi. When Shekhar introduces his fiancée to his brother, the trio builds a warm circle of friendship, and the family welcomes Shobha Malhotra. At the same time, Amit falls for Chandni, and the two plan to marry.
Tragedy interrupts this life when Shekhar is killed in the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. Shobha, who is pregnant, faces grief and social stigma. To protect her and honor his memory, Amit marries Shobha, ending his relationship with Chandni, who later marries Dr. V. K. Anand.
Amit and Shobha survive a car accident, but Shobha suffers a miscarriage. Without a child to bind them, their marriage grows emotionally distant. Amit and Chandni reconnect and begin meeting in secret, a turn that heightens tension, especially for Shobha and for the inspector Inspector Kulbhushan, who investigates a hit-and-run involving the lovers.
When Anand departs on a business trip, Amit and Chandni plan to leave together. News arrives that Anand’s plane has crashed, prompting them to rush to the site, along with Shobha. Chandni, moved by the events, chooses to stay with her husband. The film ends with Amit returning to Shobha and the two rebuilding their relationship.
