Jesse Tucker, Jamie Walters, and his four friends live at Benedict Boys Home under the strict guidance of headmaster Eugene Benedict, Richard Jordan, who has a daughter Sara Benedict, Heather Graham. Newcomer music teacher Jack Cabe, John Travolta, brings the power of rock and roll into their world, challenging the school’s conservative atmosphere. When Benedict threatens Cabe with dismissal, he orders the boys to find a radio and tune into the show Midnight Rider, using music as a doorway to possibility and rebellion.

Jesse makes a bold bet with the group that he would have sex with Sara, but as he spends time with her, he discovers a genuine connection built on honesty and shared feelings rather than bravado. The pair’s growing closeness unfolds amid the usual gang dynamics and school tensions, turning his risky promise into something more meaningful.

The boys sneak out to a local club to witness the live energy of the crowd; there, Jesse delivers an impressive onstage performance that captures the crowd and solidifies his budding identity as a musician and leader among his friends.

Back in town, Cabe becomes the subject of suspicion: he is revealed to be a murderer on the run, and he flees the police. In a tense turn, Jesse steals Eugene’s car to seek Cabe, who finally confesses to killing a man while defending his black friend in a club where they performed, revealing a complicated past that tests the group’s loyalties and courage.

With the truth out in the open, Jesse pleads for Cabe to stop running, but Cabe’s stance remains unresolved as the band prepares for a major appearance at a fair. The Benedict Boys’ set begins in a familiar vein, yet the moment Cabe surrenders to the police shifts the atmosphere; still, Jesse fires up the stage with rock and roll, thrilling the younger crowd while drawing disapproval from the adults.

As the story nears its end, Headmaster Benedict’s authority looks increasingly strained, and the evolving bond between his daughter Sara and Jesse hints at a fragile hope amid confrontation and consequence.
