In Washington, D.C., Fin Shepard attends an awards ceremony at the White House where the President hands him the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his heroics during the sharknado events of 2013 and 2014. As a tropical depression approaches the capital, a new sharknado forms, attacking the city and leaving casualties including the Mayor of New York City and numerous security personnel. Fin and the President join forces to confront the raging swarm, and the sharknado eventually evaporates rather than being wiped out by force alone.
Worried about his pregnant wife, April Dawn Wexler-Shepard, who is at Universal Orlando Resort with their daughter Claudia Sheperd and her mother May Wexler, Fin races down the East Coast toward Florida. Along the way, he encounters a “fognado” that is blasted away by his former employee Nova Clarke and her partner Lucas Stevens, who have been tracking sharknado activity across the country in a mobile RV outfitted with weapons to save lives.
Nova and Lucas realize a vast sharknado wall will soon engulf the East Coast. The trio drives to Charleston Air Force Base to obtain a fighter jet that can reach Orlando. Lucas sacrifices himself to curb an approaching sharknado, and Nova and Fin destroy another near the Daytona International Speedway during the Coke Zero 400, crash-landing their jet inside the Universal resort. There, a sharknado kills Claudia’s friend Jess while Claudia and Billy manage to escape and reunite with their families.
They take shelter in the Universal Studios Globe at the resort’s entrance, which is ripped away by a sharknado and leaves May injured, sending her to the hospital. The remaining group seeks help from Fin’s estranged father, Gil Shepard, a former NASA colonel, who agrees to help with a dangerous plan to break the storm from space. They reach a NASA facility near Cape Canaveral to stage a mission using a top‑secret Space Shuttle that will ignite rocket fuel tanks to dissipate the fury above Earth.
Nova accidentally reveals to April that Fin intends to go to space, creating tension between them as the countdown to launch proceeds. The sharknado wall strikes the NASA site just as takeoff begins, taking Billy’s life as he fights sharks to protect Claudia. With little time to spare, April joins Fin and Gil on the space flight. Nova uses a fighter jet to carve a path through the wall, enabling the crew to reach orbit and detonate the shuttle’s external tank, though the blast does not stop the wall.
Gil Shepard activates a bold “Plan B,” triggering a Reagan-era satellite laser to target the storm. The beam effectively destroys the sharks but pushes them toward the shuttle, forcing Fin to confront the danger in space with an energy‑beam chainsaw. The sharks overwhelm the craft, and Fin and April are swallowed by two of them before re-emerging on a dramatic return to Earth. In the aftermath, Fin discovers that April had given birth during the descent and names their son Gil, a nod to his father.
As April recovers Fin’s astronaut badge, a piece of shuttle debris falls back to Earth, and it appears to seal her fate.
