In a small Sicilian town, Sciacca, the film follows Agnese, Stefania Sandrelli Ascalone, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Vincenzo, Saro Urzì Ascalone, a powerful quarry owner, and echoes the social satire and moral tension that Germi’s Divorce, Italian Style laid bare.
Her sister Matilde, Paola Biggio Ascalone, is engaged to Peppino Califano, Aldo Puglisi; Agnese, at fifteen, is drawn to Peppino, Matilde’s fiancé, and becomes pregnant. The family’s shock soon spirals into a test of honor, law, and the core values of their community.
Vincenzo, Saro Urzì Ascalone, furious at the prospect of a scandal, commands Peppino to marry Agnese and even tries to enlist his son Antonio, Lando Buzzanca, to carry out a deadly act. Agnese learns of the plot and escapes from a house that seeks to confine her, making her way to the police to seek protection.
The authorities arrest both Peppino and Agnese, but the men deny the alleged events. The prosecutor, weighing the facts, decides to charge Peppino with statutory rape because Agnese was under the age of consent, which was 16 at the time. Both sets of parents press for a marriage, citing a narrow exception to the law that could be interpreted if the couple had eloped.
Vincenzo forces Peppino to stage a fake kidnapping of Agnese and then marry her, and the whole town gathers as the magistrate is briefed on the supposed happy outcome. Yet when the magistrate asks Agnese to confirm the tale, she bursts into tears, revealing she has been coerced. The crowd’s anger turns to derision as the Ascalones return home, and Vincenzo suffers a heart attack.
In a bid to preserve his honor, Vincenzo dies in private after persuading Agnese to marry Peppino, choosing to sacrifice his own life rather than delay the wedding. Matilde, faced with the consequences and the vow of the family, resolves to become a nun, ending the immediate crisis with a stark sacrifice that reshapes the family’s future.
