The narrative of Secret Superstar unfolds in the vibrant town of Vadodara (Baroda) in Gujarat, India. This poignant tale revolves around an Indian Muslim high school girl, Insia (Zaira Wasim), and her earnest yet challenging pursuit of her dreams against the backdrop of family struggles. Living in a household dominated by her harsh father, Farookh (Raj Arjun), Insia also shares her home with her loving mother Najma (Meher Vij) and her younger brother, Guddu. Insia’s deep passion for singing is met with fierce opposition from her father, who dismisses her aspirations.
When Farookh is away on business trips, Insia sees a fleeting opportunity to enter a music contest where the prize is a laptop and a year of free internet. Despite her mother’s encouragement to seek permission from her father, Insia never manages to do so, as Farookh continually berates both her and Najma. In a bid to support her daughter, Najma surprises Insia with a laptop. Overjoyed, Insia immerses herself in music and soon discovers YouTube as a medium to share her talent. Cloaked in anonymity with a Niqab, she records a song and uploads it under the alias ‘Secret Superstar’, effortlessly captivating audiences and even catching the eye of Shakti Kumar (Aamir Khan), a talented yet abrasive former singer and music director.
However, Insia is initially hesitant to accept Shakti’s invitation to Mumbai for a recording session, haunted by the negative accounts she’s heard about him. Her fears escalate when she sees a newspaper article about her alter ego, which prompts her to race home and hide it before her father sees it. Unfortunately, this distraction leads to poor grades in her tests, leaving her father enraged, which results in violence against her mother and destruction of Insia’s beloved guitar.
As the situation at home deteriorates, Insia’s life takes a crucial turn when Farookh announces a prospective marriage for her in Saudi Arabia. In her desperation for freedom, Insia seeks legal advice from a lawyer who once fought against Shakti Kumar. Ultimately, she agrees to go to Mumbai with Shakti, seeking both artistic and personal liberation.
In the city, Insia struggles initially to adapt to Shakti’s song, feeling that the music is out of touch with her generation. Yet, upon realizing Shakti’s profound musicality, she adapts the song into something fresh. As she records this new version, Insia’s fame skyrockets, and she is soon nominated for the prestigious title of best female singer.
However, her triumphant rise is shadowed by mounting familial pressures. Insia’s attempts to file for divorce from her father are met with resistance from her mother, concerned for their finances. This internal conflict is exacerbated when Farookh prepares to take the family to Saudi Arabia, sealing Insia’s fate. On the last day of school, her connections with Chintan, a classmate with feelings for her, deepen, but the reality of her impending departure looms large.
The climax unfolds during a pivotal moment at the award ceremony, where Insia is poised to finally reveal her identity. Despite the disappointment of not winning the award, the true winner acknowledges Insia’s talent, inviting her on stage. In a moment of catharsis, Insia sheds her identity as the ‘Secret Superstar’ and dedicates her accolade to her mother, finally liberating herself from her father’s oppressive grasp. Through the lens of family, love, and the pursuit of one’s passion, Secret Superstar is a compelling narrative of courage and resilience.
