In the early Northern Song era, around AD 986 in northeastern China, the Yang clan rises from the ashes of the fallen Northern Han and pledges loyalty to the Song regime. The clan’s patriarch, Yang Ye, [Adam Cheng Siu-Chow], forges a cautious peace with the new rulers after decades of conflict. His steadfast leadership anchors a family that will be tested by war, politics, and fate as the regime stabilizes around a fragile balance of power.

Years later, the Yang family’s seventh son, Yang Yansi, [Fu Xinbo], steps into the glare of a martial world when he fills in for his sixth brother in a dangerous tournament against Pan Renmei’s son Pan Bao, in a bid to win the hand of Later Zhou’s former princess Chai Meirong. The confrontation ends in tragedy, as Pan Bao is killed and Chai Meirong’s future is sealed by blood and consequence. The next morning, Yang Ye and Pan Renmei confront the issue before the emperor, and a harsh punishment follows: Yang Ye slashes down thirty lashes upon his own young sons, a brutal display of fraternal risk and political gravity that tests the family’s loyalty and resilience.

Soon after, the Song borders are attacked as Khitan forces burn frontline stations, signaling a ruthless campaign of revenge. The Khitan army, led by Yelü Yuan, seeks vengeance for a long-ago defeat against the Yang clan, complicating existing political tensions. Pan Renmei is rewarded with fifty thousand troops to rally the defense, yet his leadership proves flawed. Yang Ye is assigned a lesser task—to lead a charge as a scout—placing him at the heart of a fracture between ambition, duty, and survival. When the two armies clash, Pan Renmei’s inexperience and miscalculations sow chaos, and the Song defense collapses in a decisive Khitan victory. Yang Ye becomes trapped behind enemy lines in an abandoned town in front of Wolf Mountain, a siege that will demand every ounce of courage from his kin.

Pan Renmei’s stubborn refusal to risk resources to rescue him deepens the catastrophe. His wife, She Saihua, [Xu Fan], is left to shoulder the pain as she sends her seven sons on a perilous mission to reach the besieged town. The young men push through overwhelming odds, guided by a fierce sense of filial duty and clan loyalty, only to discover that Yelü Yuan’s trap was laid long before their arrival. Leading the assault are the eldest son, Yang Yanping, [Ekin Cheng Yee-Kin], and the other six brothers—among them Yang Yan’an [Vic Chou], Yang Yanzhao [Wu Chun], Yang Yanging? (not named here), Yang Yanging? (not named here), Yang Yanding [Apollo Yu], and Yang Yanhui [Jerry Lee]—who bear the family’s banner as they march into battle, facing thousands of Khitan warriors with only a small band of Yang Clan’s elite soldiers.

In Wolf Mountain’s town, the Khitan bombardment intensifies as a fierce, painstaking escape unfolds. The seven brothers manage to extract their father, yet the price is steep: the army’s soldiers perish, and Yang Ye is grievously wounded by a poisoned arrow—mooted as if already hurt in the prior skirmish—and he ultimately chooses death over capture. The seven brothers bear his body home, a solemn pilgrimage born of love and the stubborn will to honor their father with a proper burial and a chance for their mother to see him once more.

Before departure, She Saihua visits a fortune teller who prophesies a grave warning: “Seven will set off, six will return.” The fate of the Yang clan aligns with this ominous slip of paper, and the prophecy becomes a lens through which the ensuing tragedy is understood. The eldest son, Yang Yanping, leads the remaining brothers through the crucible of war, and the struggle culminates in personal sacrifice, misfortune, and a stark test of destiny. Yang Yansi dies after Pan Renmei’s archers pull him down—ordered by Pan Renmei’s command—as vengeance for the peril inflicted upon their forces, a grim reminder of the brutal calculus of war.

Yang Yan’an and Yang Yanzhao, surviving brothers, endure the hardest trials as the Khitan threat presses on. Yelü Yuan himself stalks the family, seeking to end the Yang line, and five of Yang Ye’s sons fall in this running blood feud. Yet the youngest of the surviving siblings, Yang Yanzhao, rises in the crucible of loss to meet the challenge head-on. He defeats Yelü Yuan in a defining duel, a moment that seems to rewrite fate even as the cost of war lingers in the air.

The twist of destiny is revealed: the fortune teller’s warning was not simply about numbers but about lineage, sacrifice, and resilience. Yang Yanzhao returns with his father’s body and the weapons of his fallen brothers, along with Yelü Yuan’s severed head, a grim trophy that signals the turning tide of the war and the rebirth of the Yang clan’s legend. Though four bodies are recovered and two remain missing, the ceremony of burial and the victory over Yelü Yuan mark a turning point in the clan’s history. Yang Yanzhao later marries Chai Meirong, sealing a personal and political reconciliation that echoes through the dynasty’s future.

With the loss of so many brothers and the heavy price paid in blood, the Yang clan’s reputation becomes a cornerstone of Chinese legend. The Song emperor’s realm is spared from total ruin, and the Khitan empress, facing the collapse of her general’s fortune, must temper her assault. In the wake of this succession of trials, the Yang clan emerges not merely as survivors but as a symbol of courage, loyalty, and resilience—an enduring testament to a family that chose to fight, endure, and endure again, shaping a legacy that resonates in the annals of history.
