Set in New Zealand in 1868, against the backdrop of Tītokowaru’s War—the turbulent phase of the New Zealand Wars between Māori forces and colonial troops—the film follows Sarah O’Brien Samantha Morton, a woman who has grown up among soldiers at a frontier garrison on Te Awa Nui, the Great River. Pregnant at sixteen by a young Māori boy, she brings a son into the world, named Boy Rawiri Pene. Seven years pass, and Boy is kidnapped by his Māori grandfather, leaving Sarah crushed and determined to find him.
Abandoned by her soldier father, she spends years chasing a lead, her life consumed by the search. Her only true ally is Doyle Kiefer Sutherland, a battered, worn-down soldier who cannot truly help her, yet offers a sense of connection in a world that keeps pushing her toward isolation.
Her path takes a fateful turn when she is lured to the village of the ill rebel chief Te Kai Po Temuera Morrison for a chance to glimpse her child. There, she meets Boy’s uncle Wiremu Cliff Curtis and finds herself drawn to the village’s rhythms and a life far removed from the soldiers’ rigid code.
Relying on the medical skills she learned from her father, Sarah tends to Te Kai Po and begins to reconcile with her son. Yet the idyll shatters when she learns she has healed the chief only to hear him declare war on the Colonials—the men she still regards as friends and family. Her desperation deepens when she discovers Boy intends to prove himself in battle, refusing to return down river with her.
As the conflict escalates, Sarah stands at the center of a storm of loyalties, torn between the love she bears for Boy and Wiremu, the pull of the white world she once knew, and the brutal truths she has witnessed on both sides. In the end, she must choose where she truly belongs. Will she be drawn back into the life she once led, or summon the courage to remain with the people and the land that have begun to feel like home?
