Tova Sullivan, portrayed by Sally Field, is an elderly widow who works as a somewhat misanthropic night janitor at an aquarium located in the fictional Sowell Bay, Washington. Despite encouragement to retire, she remains devoted to her job. Following the tragic loss of her son Erik years ago and her husband recently, Tova becomes increasingly withdrawn from her daily life. She even distances herself from her friends, a group she affectionately calls the “Knitwits,” who seem to care more about gossip than the actual craft of knitting.

During her shifts, Tova builds an unusual friendship with Marcellus, an elderly yet wise octopus (voiced by Alfred Molina), who dreams of escaping the confines of the aquarium. One day, Marcellus attempts to make an escape, and Tova discovers him by following a slippery path on the floor. In her effort to return him to safety, she slips and injures her ankle, which forces her to take time off for healing.

At the same time, Cameron Cassmore, played by Lewis Pullman, finds himself in town with motor troubles in his van. With no money, he needs to secure temporary work to cover the expenses for the repairs on the vehicle that once belonged to his late mother, Daphne. As luck would have it, he is hired to cover Tova’s shifts at the aquarium during her recuperation. Unable to resist the urge to check on the aquarium, Tova chides Cameron for his laid-back attitude towards his responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of taking pride in one’s work. Through her mentorship, they form a surprising bond that transcends their circumstances.

While searching through his mother’s belongings in the van, Cameron stumbles upon several precious items, including a ring from his father, whose identity remains a mystery for him. The ring is engraved with the intriguing letters “EELS,” along with an old photograph bearing the name Simon Brinks. After some initial investigation, Cameron manages to track down Simon, who now enjoys a successful career as a real estate mogul. In their meeting, Simon clarifies that his relationship with Daphne had been entirely platonic, revealing that he is gay. This disheartening news, coupled with setbacks from his former band “Moth Sausage,” frustrates Cameron enough that during a heated moment at the aquarium, he angrily throws the ring into the eels’ tank. Marcellus, observing the incident, later enters the tank in an attempt to retrieve it.

Throughout Tova’s journey, she experiences poignant flashbacks of her late son Erik. Just before he fell ill, Tova and her husband Will had placed themselves on a waiting list for a senior living community. Now, grieving and alone, Tova quietly resolves to move into the senior community after confirming that a room is available. Just as Tova puts her house on the market, she receives devastating news that Marcellus has a limited time left to live. Witnessing his longing to escape, she suspects Marcellus wishes to return to the ocean to die peacefully. In a touching gesture, Tova carefully places Marcellus in a bucket and transports him to the dock, where she lowers him into the water so he can find freedom.

Afterwards, upon looking into the bucket, Tova finds the exact ring Cameron had thrown away. When Cameron arrives to join her, she reveals that “EELS” actually stands for the initials of her late son, Erik. This revelation brings to light that Erik was Cameron’s father, connecting the two and offering them solace amidst their grief.

In the aftermath of these revelations, Tova decides against moving into the retirement home, and Cameron opts to sell his van to live with her instead. While preparing to move into Erik’s old room, Cameron uncovers a box hidden beneath the floorboards, untouched since Erik’s disappearance. As he opens it, they discover a treasure trove of photographs featuring Erik with Daphne, along with a list of names, one prominently circled—Cameron. This confirms their relationship and his paternity, revealing that Erik had named Cameron before his untimely passing.
