Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure 1977

Marcella Claire Williams [Marcella] returns home and heads straight to her nursery playroom to tuck away her beloved Raggedy Ann Didi Conn. As soon as the door closes behind her, the room comes alive with the soft chatter of toys who suddenly Raggedy Ann explains the magic of a world beyond the window. In a warm, almost conspiratorial tone, Raggedy Ann reveals that Marcella is turning seven, and a mysterious, beautifully wrapped package sits in the corner, drawing the others’ curious eyes. When Marcella finally opens the box, a delicate bisque doll from Paris named Babette Niki Flacks steps into the room with a poised grace that belies her homesickness. The other toys welcome Babette with bright smiles, yet her heart aches for the world she left behind, and the absence of her homeland hums in the corners of the nursery.

Captain Contagious George S. Irving quickly notices Babette, and a sly, almost playful fixation develops. He moves with a sly confidence, and after tricking Ann into loosening her guard, he kidnaps Babette and slips out the nursery window, whisking her away to an unknown fate. The capture shatters the toy-family’s comfort, and Ann and Raggedy Andy—Mark Baker—look at each other with a shared resolve: Babette must be saved. They vow to track the kidnapper to the ends of their imagined world.

Their journey begins in earnest as Ann and Andy step into the Deep Deep Woods, a realm of color and peril that feels both wondrous and slightly frightening. Soon they encounter the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees Fred Stuthman, a blue stuffed animal who has wandered away from a home and is haunted by ghostly camels that seem to beckon him toward safety. Despite his fear and confusion, the Camel clings to a quiet hope that he might find belonging again, and Ann promises that, once Babette is safe, he can come home with them. The trio’s march grows heavier as the Camel, burdened by his own memories, inadvertently tumbles off a cliff in a desperate, impulsive sprint, leaving the friends to press onward with renewed caution.

Their path leads them to the Taffy Pit, where the Greedy [Joe Silver] lingers amid sticky sweetness and a hunger that never truly satisfies him despite endless feasting. The Greedy eyes the candy heart tucked inside Ann with a gnawing hunger, but the toy band proves nimble and resourceful, evading his grasp and slipping away toward new horizons. The next welcoming stop is Looney Land, ruled by the tiny King Koo Koo [Marty Brill], a monarch who believes he can grow only by making others laugh at his own expense. His court of whimsy closes in around the group, determined to keep the toys as captives. The dolls slip away again, this time in a small boat, while King Koo Koo summons a colossal sea monster, Gazooks [Paul Dooley], to pursue them through the water.

During a tense voyage, the ship that holds Babette and Contagious comes into view, and Ann, Andy, and the Camel realize Babette has become the new captain, with Contagious imprisoned below deck. When Ann tries to plead with Babette to return to them, Babette’s pride flares up and she orders the trio tied to the mast. Yet hope is not lost, because Queasy [Arnold Stang] manages to unlock Contagious’s shackles from below and climb back up to safety, declaring his love for Babette in a moment of brave, comic sincerity. With Contagious freed, the crew fights back against the chaos above, and the Captain’s ship is drawn into a sharp, ticklish standoff with the King and Gazooks.

The tickling contest escalates quickly, inflating the monarch to impossible proportions as laughter swells through the ship, and Babette, torn between pride and forgiveness, begs for mercy. The clever toys see through the vanity of King Koo Koo, declaring that his ego is “full of hot air,” and it is left to Andy to urge Queasy to pop him. The resulting explosion sends the rulers and their monstrous aides spiraling away into the foam and spray of the sea, ending the immediate threat with a cataclysm of laughter and release.

The next day dawns quiet and strange in the real world as Marcella discovers the toys scattered across her backyard. The heart of her room has shifted in their absence, but the bond between the dolls remains strong. Babette, having learned and grown through the ordeal, apologizes for the trouble and accepts Ann’s invitation to friendship, along with Contagious’s softened affection. The Camel, newly welcomed into the fold, lingers at the edge of the window, watching with a tentative but hopeful gaze as the dolls invite him into their family.

Marcella picks up the Camel the following morning, cradling the blue plush with a wide, delighted smile.
