Froggy and his parents listen to a Red Skelton USO performance on the radio. Inspired by his father’s remark that comedians can earn good money, he and his friends decide they should try their hand at being radio entertainers. They head to a local used bookstore to buy a joke book, then march into a nearby dentist’s lobby in search of a sponsor. What follows is a chaotic demonstration of enthusiasm that misses the mark: their jokes land with a groan, their songs grate on the nerves of the waiting patients, and eventually the staff escort them out, leaving the kids crestfallen but undeterred.

Not discouraged, they return to the bookstore to hunt for another source of material. There, a loud, self-重要 actor—described in the story as a ham—convincingly steers them toward Shakespearean drama instead of straight comedy. Donning theatrical costumes, the gang bravely auditions their “sad and tragic” radio act for a prospective sponsor—a funeral home. Yet the over-the-top performance only triggers laughter from the trio of funeral-home owners, who find their earnestness more entertaining than viable advertising.

As they trudge home, the crestfallen troupe crosses the path of the Cantfall Cake Hour radio show host, who is wandering the street with a microphone, sampling passersby for his program. Amused by the kids’ colorful outfits, he seizes the moment to pose his signature interview question of the day: “what do you think is the crying need of radio today?” The kids, catching the spirit of their quest, reply in unison with a simple, pointed answer: > a sponsor!
