During the 1859 Battle of Solferino, Slovenian lieutenant Joseph von Trotta is wounded while rescuing Emperor Franz‑Joseph I. The grateful emperor promotes him to captain and ennobles him, pulling him far from his farming background. Years later Trotta finds a school textbook glorifying his deed in sentimental terms and, angered, lodges a complaint with the Imperial Court.
