Set in ancient Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero, a young patrician named Vinicius falls for Lygia, a beautiful woman whose father was a Barbarian commander. Vinicius desires Lygia as his concubine, but she is a devout Christian and finds this unacceptable. When Vinicius is injured, Lygia's care for him sparks a connection, and he becomes intrigued by her faith, seeking guidance from the Apostle Peter. Meanwhile, Nero, falsely blaming Christians for a devastating fire in Rome, orders a brutal persecution, leading to imprisonment, torture, and executions.

The film, set in Nero’s Rome, follows a Roman patrician who falls for a Christian captive, a romance that unfolds amid religious strife and political maneuvering. The cast includes Magdalena Mielcarz and Pawel Delag.
At the outset, the Christian woman, who is held as a hostage in the capital, rejects the patrician’s advances. The patrician’s clever confidant sees an opportunity to sway the emperor and tries to arrange a marriage that would bind them, while the woman’s community seeks to protect her from a union she does not consent to. The woman’s steadfast faith drives her to go into hiding with fellow Christians, and the pursuer, determined to claim his prize, follows her into the folds of the clandestine group.
A tense pursuit ensues. The patrician brings a gladiator ally to search for her, venturing into gatherings of Christians to locate the hiding place. A brutal clash erupts when the pursuer confronts the group, but the Christians’ courage and kindness gradually turn the tide. In the ensuing struggle, the Christian defender kills the gladiator, and the patrician sustains wounds of his own. He is tended to by the woman and her community, and through their warmth and mercy, he begins to reevaluate his beliefs. Over time, he experiences a shift in perspective and chooses to embrace Christianity, while the woman accepts him.
The story intensifies as Rome itself burns. The emperor returns to the city and addresses the crowd with a performance of his own—one that swiftly shifts from spectacle to scapegoating. The Christians are blamed for the fire, and a long sequence of public trials and executions follows, designed to appease the terrified populace. Amid these trials, one of the most striking moments shows the defender carrying the woman atop a bull during a dangerous display. The crowd and guards alike rally in approval as the defender proves his resolve, and the emperor ultimately spares them, granting them a fragile moment of relief.
As the flames subside, the emperor’s grip on power weakens, and he meets his end by his own hand. With Rome facing upheaval, the lovers depart the city together, seeking a future beyond the imperial capital. The tale closes on themes of faith, forgiveness, and the ways love can transform even a mortal enemy of conscience, leaving a lasting impression of resilience in the face of persecution and chaos.
