Set in Rome, AD 303, Emperor Diocletian strips his favorite, Sebastian, of his captaincy, reduces him to a common soldier and exiles him to a remote coastal outpost. There, fellow soldiers, driven by desire, engage in homosexual encounters. Officer Severus becomes obsessed with Sebastian, whose repeated refusals provoke conflict. Because of his Christian faith, Sebastian is humiliated, tortured and executed.
