Rohini, Sarika, is an aspiring actress who is caught shoplifting in a busy shopping complex. As Rohini is seized by the moment, the suave Marc Zuber appears as Ranjeet, stepping in to pretend he’s her partner and guiding them both away from the crowd. This chance rescue masks a more complicated bargain: Rohini shares her hunger to be on the stage, a dream forged from poverty and persistence, and Ranjeet—who owns a theater and produces shows—offers a pathway to stardom along with a looming threat of coercive advances. Rohini, driven by necessity and ambition, agrees to the arrangement and begins to trade favors in exchange for opportunities, all while trying to sustain a fragile sense of autonomy.

The world Rohini enters is a dangerous blend of art and manipulation. The director of an upcoming play berates Rohini, drawing the attention of another actor-director, Rakesh, played by Sanjeev Kumar. Rakesh mentors Rohini, teaching her the subtleties of acting and helping her unlock a fresh, compelling performance. The collaboration quickly blossoms into love, and the two marry, buoyed by shared dreams and a deep emotional connection. Their happiness is shattered when a freak stage accident leaves Rakesh blinded as he shields Rohini from danger. In the hospital, he undergoes rigorous therapy to come to terms with blindness, while a compassionate nurse, Ranjeeta Kaur as Sita, helps him adapt by teaching him to read Braille and move with a guiding stick.

The stroke of misfortune deepens Rohini’s dual life. It becomes clear that Rohini has been carrying on an affair with Ranjeet, and she plots to rejoin the theater to secure her return to the spotlight while maintaining the liaison. To support Rakesh while Rohini pursues stage work, Rohini hires Sita as a full-time nurse, a decision that binds their fates more tightly together. During a rehearsal, Ranjeet mistakes Sita for Rohini but is unapologetic about his entanglements. Sita, aware of the affair, chooses to keep quiet, shielding Rohini’s secret for the moment. When Rakesh learns of the affair, he is overwhelmed by a consuming sense of betrayal and begins to devise a plan for revenge. He learns the layout of Ranjeet’s house and the surrounding area, hails a taxi by sound, and even uses a voice recorder linked to his home telephone to capture every conversation.

A pivotal turn arrives when a scheduled meeting between Rohini and Ranjeet is set for 4 P.M. With the plan in place, Rakesh slips out in disguise—without the guiding dog Sita had provided—and makes his way to the apartment. There, Rohini becomes the target of violence at the hands of a man who believes himself to be the instrument of fate. Rohini is killed with Ranjeet’s revolver, and the police quickly suspect Ranjeet. Inspector Shatrughan Sinha is assigned to the case; the investigation moves slowly under his keen, methodical gaze, and he initially suspects Rakesh while wrestling with a lack of conclusive evidence.

In a tense confrontation, Shatru contends with a case that seems almost unsolvable: a blind man capable of planning and executing murder. Sita, facing mounting scrutiny as a potential suspect, confesses to protect Rakesh, and the truth finally emerges when Rakesh himself steps forward. He demonstrates the sequence of events on the day of the murder, including the intimate details of how he used the recorded conversations and his controlled, voice-guided approach to target shooting. In a shocking turn, he fires at Ranjeet—who has just returned to his home with a new companion—accidentally killing him. The courtroom faces a moral and legal dilemma as Rakesh is sentenced for Rohini’s murder and imprisoned for seven years, while the authorities deem him not guilty of killing Ranjeet. His eventual release comes early for good behavior, and he exits prison with Sita to start anew at home.

The closing moments offer a quiet, almost ritual ending: a frail yet hopeful return home, a new life with Sita, and the quiet presence of Inspector Shatru seeing them off. An elderly fakir appears throughout the film, singing a constant refrain that guides Rakesh’s senses and underlines the film’s dramatic rhythm, a wandering voice that ties together sound, memory, and fate in an otherwise bustling, perilous world.
