Some time after the Golden Goose incident, Puss in Boots, Antonio Banderas, rides his horse through a vast desert, deep in thought about the crossroads his life has reached. His quiet journey is interrupted when Italian knights capture him and bring him before Princess Alessandra Bellagamba, Charlotte Newhouse, whose Heart of Fire Ruby—the crown jewel of her kingdom—has gone missing. At first, Puss believes the charges are a setup, but the Princess makes clear she hired him for his reputation and reveals that a French thief known as “The Whisperer” is the real culprit; her knights have already captured his three henchmen.
Those henchmen turn out to be three kittens, the Diablos, who the Princess dreads despite their innocent demeanor. The Diablos agree to help Puss on the condition that they will be freed if they return the ruby. When Puss leads the Diablos into the desert, they turn on him and bury him alive. He escapes and recaptures the Diablos using his wide eyes to outmaneuver theirs.
That night, he speaks with them about betrayal and loneliness, revealing that they have no family and are orphans like him. He confesses how hard it is to grow up unsure of whom to trust, and he recalls how Humpty led him astray, warning that the Whisperer could do the same to them. Inspired by his empathy, the Diablos choose to turn over a new leaf, and Puss takes them under his wing, teaching them how to fight and play. He also gives them names: Perla Nina Zoe Bakshi for the one who stands out as one of a kind, Gonzalo Miles Bakshi for his scrappy temper, and Sir Timoteo Montenegro the Third.
The fostered trio, now steadier and braver, lead Puss to the Whisperer’s secret hideout. There they confront the Whisperer, a villain whose low voice seems to come from beneath his hat, which he uses as a megaphone to speak clearly, and it’s revealed that he has worn the Heart as a belt decoration. After learning that the Diablos brought Puss to recover the heart, the Whisperer is prepared to punish them for their betrayal, but Puss fights him and frees the Diablos. The kids hurry back to help, and the Whisperer topples into a bottomless pit as Puss reclaims the Heart of Fire.
With the ruby restored, Puss returns it to the Princess, who rewards him with gold and accepts the Diablos as her new personal bodyguards. They share heartfelt goodbyes, and Puss attempts to finish his famous line, but the doors swing shut before he can finish.
