Kriss, a psychiatric patient, views life in black‑and‑white, using the B&W melodrama ‘Pure Hearts’—watched with fellow inmate Willy—as his bible. After a clash removes their viewing rights, Kriss learns the film’s young heroine, Linda, is embodied by actress Ulla Vilstrup. Obsessed, he and Willy set fire to the ward and escape, convinced life is what they make of it.
