Vaudeville-era magician Presto Doug Sweetland is famous for a hat trick that fans remember: he pulls his rabbit Alec Azam out of his top hat. The act hinges on a mysterious, almost comic connection between two hats—one on stage and a wizard’s hat kept backstage—with Alec imprisoned in a small cage, hungry and irritable, unable to reach his carrot. After Presto returns from a meal, he tries to rehearse the routine with Alec, revealing the twist: anything that passes into either hat will reappear from the other.
