Flannery is a station manager who runs every action through his rigid company manual, a habit that shapes how he handles even the smallest deliveries. His routine is challenged when a shipment arrives labeled as guinea pigs. Convinced they are real pigs, he demands that the recipient, McMorehouse, pay him 48 cents to forward the box. McMorehouse balks at this price, finding it steep for a box of pets and refuses.

Flannery immediately seeks guidance from the head office, sending a message to confirm whether these creatures should be treated as pigs or simply as pets. While he waits for a response, the situation spirals: the two guinea pigs reproduce rapidly, and within days their numbers explode, swamping the entire station. At the company headquarters, a zoologist arrives with clear, factual reasoning, concluding that guinea pigs are not real pigs, which means the 44 cent rate would apply instead.

When the company finally replies, Flannery journeys to McMorehouse’s house to deliver the animals, only to learn that McMorehouse has moved away. With no precedent in the manual to address such a scenario, Flannery communicates that the final decision rests with the company. The corporation decides to have the guinea pigs sent back to the main office, a plan aided by a suggestion from a coworker at the office. Flannery then transfers the animals to the station’s head office.

The tale reaches its twist when, upon leaving, Flannery discovers the animals have found a new home in the circus. The experience prompts a hard-won vow from him about the limits of rule-following:
