Born in Spokane, Washington, he began his entertainment career in the early 1930s, first gaining attention on local radio stations before moving to New York, where his talents were quickly noticed by nationally syndicated shows. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s Thompson lent his voice to a remarkable variety of characters, most famously Droopy, the lethargic yet cunning dog created by Tex Avery for MGM cartoons; his dead‑pan delivery turned Droopy into an enduring pop‑culture icon. In addition to Droopy, he voiced characters such as the bumbling Mr. Houdini in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, the dignified J. C. Mick in The Flintstones spinoff, and many supporting roles in Disney shorts, showcasing his uncanny ability to shift seamlessly between humor and sincerity.
