Pete ’n’ Tillie 1972

Tillie Shlain Seltzer, Carol Burnett, is introduced at a party where her friends Gertrude Wilson, Geraldine Page, and Burt Wilson, Barry Nelson, are playing matchmakers for the charmingly odd Pete Seltzer, Walter Matthau. Pete is a San Francisco-based bachelor with eccentric habits, a man who fills his days with quirky motivational research, ragtime piano, and a streak of punny humor.

He drifts in and out of Tillie’s life, sometimes going days without calling, but when he does show up at her door, they share an intimate night together, after which he learns that Tillie is a virgin. It seems he might still be seeing other women, yet a promotion at his work becomes a turning point, and Tillie announces that she is pregnant and that it’s time to marry.

They marry, buy a house, and Tillie gives birth to a baby boy, Robbie Seltzer. Yet Pete’s extramarital affairs continue, and Tillie even confronts one of his young lovers at lunch, trying to hold the family together.

Years pass until their nine-year-old son Robbie falls gravely ill. Pete attempts to shield him by keeping him in what Tillie calls “a world of nonsense,” a phrase that underscores the barrier between innocence and harsh reality. > a world of nonsense

The child’s death shatters Tillie’s religious faith and ruptures the marriage, leaving Tillie to confront the devastation while Pete retreats into drinking and secedes to an apartment.

Tillie’s grief is eased only slowly, especially as she forms a cautious friendship with Jimmy Twitchell, René Auberjonois, a gay man who is willing to marry her if that would truly make her happy. Together, they plot to reveal Gertrude Wilson’s true age once and for all, a plan that culminates in a public, bitter confrontation between the two women.

As Tillie’s world grows smaller, she ends up in a sanitarium, her life paused in a quiet, introspective limbo. Yet Pete returns, and witnessing how their son’s death forced him to confront years of hidden pain moves Tillie. In a shared moment of clarity, they leave the sanitarium together, choosing to face the future side by side.
