Tom, Dick and Harry 1941

Janie, Ginger Rogers is a lively telephone operator and a daydreamer who longs for a rich, married life. Her boyfriend Tom, George Murphy a car salesman, also wants to marry, and Janie often imagines life with him.

Listening to a long-distance call between the town’s wealthiest eligible bachelor, Dick Hamilton Alan Marshal, and the girl he’s dating, Janie makes a wish that she could meet him. When an expensive car pulls up beside her, Janie thinks her wish has been granted. But the car is being driven by Harry Burgess Meredith, a garage mechanic who is taking it to be repaired.

Harry is immediately smitten with Janie. He spends time with her, kisses her, and proposes marriage. Janie now daydreams about becoming a mechanic’s wife.

Disrupting a phone call, Janie inadvertently stirs a quarrel between Dick and his girlfriend. She then meets Dick and finds herself torn, since she is now involved with all three men. Her confession that she is engaged to Dick, Tom, and Harry shocks them all, and she must navigate her growing feelings and the consequences of her choices.

After dreaming of becoming Dick’s wealthy wife, she initially chooses him, but at the last moment a kiss from Harry makes her change her mind once more. The story unfolds as a light, playful romance that weighs desire against loyalty, with Janie learning that dreams can be tantalizing but love and partnership require hard truths.
