Paradise Road 1997

At the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, a festive dance for soldiers and their families is abruptly interrupted by the onset of the Battle of Singapore. A bomb explodes outside the club, and the women and children are swiftly moved to a boat in a desperate bid for safety. A few hours out at sea, Japanese fighter planes target the evacuation, and the frightened passengers are forced to jump overboard into the danger below.

Three women — Adrienne Pargiter, Rosemary Leighton-Jones, and Susan Macarthy — swim toward the shores of Sumatra. Adrienne Pargiter is played by Glenn Close, while Rosemary and Susan are introduced as part of the group that survives the perilous crossing. The trio is soon discovered by a Japanese officer, Captain Tanaka, and they are first taken to a deserted village and then moved onward to a prison camp deep in the jungle, where they join the rest of the women and children who have endured the same harrowing voyage. Within the camp, life becomes a brutal routine: the prisoners are forced to bow to the Japanese officers and their flag, endure sexual violence and threats, and perform hard labor amidst dire living conditions and rampant sickness. Some women, in a bid for security and sustenance, choose to work in a brothel to secure somewhat better treatment and access to food.

Two years pass, and Adrienne and the missionary Daisy “Margaret” Drummond devise a hopeful project: a vocal orchestra intended to lift the spirits of the camp’s inhabitants even as social and religious meetings remain banned by the guards. The choir offers a glimmer of relief and a sense of unity, yet it cannot erase the fear and hardship that linger behind every day. As time moves on, numbers dwindle, but the act of singing remains a quiet act of resilience. The women are relocated again to a new site where they will endure until the war’s end, continuing to draw strength from each other in the face of oppression.

When the war finally ends, the troupe performs one last time, and the women celebrate their hard-fought freedom with a sense of relief, memory, and shared achievement. The story, told with a restrained and humane lens, highlights the strength of sisterhood under extreme duress, the cost of survival, and the enduring power of art to sustain hope in the darkest hours.
