Para Para Sakura follows Aaron Kwok as Phillip Wong Kam Sing, a dance instructor from Hong Kong who teaches at a popular studio in Shanghai. Though he is undeniably charismatic and physically appealing, Phillip carries a heavy burden of insecurity caused by achromatopsia, which often makes social interactions, especially with women, feel like a delicate and awkward performance he’s afraid to choreograph poorly.

One day, Phillip encounters a mysterious woman being chased by a group of men in suits. Upon seeing her, he experiences color for the first time in his life. He steps in to protect her in an elaborately choreographed sequence that blends action with style, and the woman, Yuri Sakura, is revealed to be the heiress of a major Japanese keiretsu. She is already engaged to the heir of another conglomerate through an arranged marriage, yet she downplays her fiancé’s status, insisting he is an older, unremarkable man.

Despite the wedding plans that loom over her, Yuri and Phillip grow much closer, almost against the clock. On the return trip, a hidden message etched inside a folding fan leads Phillip to a park at noon, where a fateful encounter awaits. There, Yuri’s husband reveals that the marriage was a strategic formality designed to solidify a corporate merger, and that he himself is in love with another woman. Yuri then appears, and the film closes with the two of them reunited, moving together in a dance that marks their shared rediscovery of color and connection as they sway to the iconic refrain of the titular song, Para Para Sakura.
