Spoilers ahead
Starring Hayden Christensen and Nicolas Cage, this sprawling, battle-worn epic follows a life haunted by violence and a vow to protect the innocent as ancient forces collide with a fragile, shifting power.
During the Crusades, a young commander named Jacob leads an army that includes Gallain in the brutal slaughter of an Arab city. Gallain pleads with Jacob to spare the civilians, insisting that killing them cannot be God’s will and urging him to turn east. The pleas touch the heart of Gallain, but the violence continues, and he soon witnesses Jacob’s transformation into someone increasingly ruthless. Unable to reconcile the carnage he’s seen with any sense of mercy, Gallain withdraws from the field.
