Off the Grid Reviews & Ratings
IMDb users rate Off the Grid 4.4/10. Our Echo Score gives it 37/100, strongest in character & emotion (55) and weakest in story & flow (25).
Off the Grid Echo Score Breakdown
Off the Grid struggles to deliver a memorable action thriller due to weak plotting and uneven execution across its main elements. While some stunts and set pieces offer moments of energy, the bare-bones narrative and underdeveloped character motivations limit engagement. Technical aspects such as editing and visual cohesion often feel low-budget and inconsistent. Although occasional action beats provide brief highlights, the film ultimately leaves a forgettable impression.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 30
In terms of art and craft, the film exhibits uneven technical execution that undermines its potential. Critics noted irregular editing and a low-budget aesthetic that often disrupts pacing. Direction delivers standard action beats but lacks the polish expected in modern thrillers. Overall, visual cohesion and production values remain serviceable but seldom rise above a modest level.
- Character & Emotion 55
When it comes to character and emotion, the performances range from competent to wooden. Several actors earn praise for bringing brief moments of engagement, yet primary roles are often described as flat or overacted. Limited character depth and inconsistent chemistry prevent sustained emotional investment. Consequently, the film’s interpersonal dynamics register as only moderately effective.
- Story & Flow 25
In terms of story and flow, the plot is largely bare-bones and predictable. Critics point to lazy plotting and dull dialogue, noting a lack of twists or meaningful stakes. Pacing is uneven, with extended chase sequences failing to build suspense. Overall, narrative coherence and originality remain limited, reducing overall engagement.
- Sensory Experience 45
When considering the sensory experience, the film delivers basic action sound design but lacks a distinctive soundtrack or immersive audio textures. Visual style is serviceable yet constrained by budgetary limitations, resulting in an inconsistent aesthetic. While practical effects provide occasional energy, sound mixing and visual cohesion rarely elevate the material. The overall sensory impact is functional but unremarkable.
- Rewatch Factor 30
In terms of rewatch factor, the film offers limited lasting appeal beyond a single viewing. The lack of narrative depth and character investment reduces the incentive for subsequent watches. Although a few action moments may register on repeat viewings, overall enjoyment on rewatch is diminished by predictable structure and uneven execution. Revisit value remains modest at best.

Spoilers ahead
Set in a quiet, wooded landscape near a sleepy town, the engineer and hacker Jack Guy Josh Duhamel has vanished off the grid, living in a cabin by a tranquil lake. He is not idle, though—he spent years developing a miniaturized energy source that was meant to be a transformative product for humanity through industry, a dream that could power communities without the burden of pollution or waste. This invention was intended to be his collaboration with the entrepreneur Belcor Peter Stormare, a project that also involved the engineer Ranish Greg Kinnear. But when Jack discovers that Belcor intends to weaponize the device rather than use it for peaceful progress, he makes a hard choice: he quits and retreats into the wilderness, determined to protect his work from misuse.
