Martinius Jacobson Edward G. Robinson is a Norwegian immigrant farmer in Wisconsin who works the land with quiet determination. He shares a simple, sturdy life with his wife Bruna Agnes Moorehead and their seven-year-old daughter Selma Margaret O’Brien, a girl whose bright spirit often clashes with the lively mischief of her five-year-old cousin Arnold Hanson Jackie ‘Butch’ Jenkins. Martinius’ simple aim is to farm well, to be a loving husband and father, and to one day build a sturdy new barn that will stand as a symbol of their security.
