The family’s finances crumble, and their dining room furniture is repossessed while the bank threatens foreclosure on their house. Clancy’s mother, Joan Whitfield [Allison Janney], fights to hold things together, Mia—sorry, I meant to keep the focus—she works to stretch every dollar and shield her children from the worst of the crisis. The pressure of poverty weighs heavily, and the community gossip about their struggles swirls around them, though Joan has the steady support of her longtime friend Sally Crowder [Cheryl Hines].

A rumor travels through the town that former resident Sondra Locke will return to witness the big Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, plus the opening of her film Every Which Way but Loose at the local movie house. This news ignites a spark in Clancy and his close circle of friends—Melora Kendall [Autumn Reeser], Bobbie Chester [Hilarie Burton], Ray [Derek Carter], and Glen [Michael McKee]—as they dream of something bigger than their small-town life.
