Lucy ‘Tex’ Warren, Claire Trevor, a determined reporter, is pulled into a provocative assignment when she investigates a bogus murder story in a black neighborhood and notices Sunny, a little girl who appears to be white. The case unsettles Tex as she and fellow reporters sift through photos and a hospital record that seem to support Flora Jackson, Flora Jackson, Fredi Washington, a fair-skinned Black seamstress, in a surprising claim about motherhood. The team weighs race, identity, and the ethics of sensational journalism, wondering whether the truth should come to light at all.
As the clues mount, Tex learns that Sunny’s origins touch a shadowy past. A prison convict surfaces with a story that Sunny might be the child of a deceased criminal, Cliff Lucas, whose wife, Barbara Harrison, Sally Blane, had attempted to flee with the baby and ended up in a car accident. Lucas had secretly tailed Barbara and took the baby from the wreck while his wife was unconscious. Flora, who had been hired by Lucas to care for the child, had kept Sunny close and raised her as her own after Lucas was killed by police, sparing the child from an orphanage and giving her a kind of found family.
Barbara, upon learning that her daughter is alive, clothes her actions in a desire to reunite with Sunny and invites Flora to live with them as a nurse, hoping for a stable, nurturing arrangement rather than a custodial battle. The emotional stakes broaden as the trio navigates loyalty, identity, and the complicated threads of love that bind them. In the end, the legal question looms large: Judge Clarke, Howard Hickman, steps in and forbids Tex from publishing the story, arguing that the notoriety could harm Sunny’s well-being and the fragile harmony of the family that has formed around her. The quiet courtroom resolution leaves Tex to reckon with the limits of truth in journalism and the lasting impact of a story on a child caught between two worlds.
