In the year 1999, the world is ensnared in an environmental holocaust born from thirty years of merciless solar flares. Exposure to these blasts triggers radiation poisoning that drives the afflicted into psychotic, murderous acts. The planet is largely evacuated of life; what remains is a desolate, arid landscape where the United States is pared down to control over only New York City and Washington, D.C. The surviving few are split between militarized encampments guarding handfuls of unscathed people and roving bands of slavers and scavengers. Water that hasn’t been irradiated, gasoline, and women have become priceless commodities, hoarded and defended with lethal force.

John Travis [Ronald L. Marchini] leads a security patrol for a compound overseen by Prescott [Adam West]. They are dispatched to probe rumors of a female captives’ auction run by the vicious Wraith, a notorious bandit. The raid is supposed to be a clean strike, but the moment the clash erupts, Travis’ squad is overwhelmed. The firefight costs the lives of his comrades and many slavers and scavengers, and the mission ends in chaos. The flare’s raging activity prevents any real chance of backup or return, leaving Travis stranded and suddenly alone in a hostile, collapsing world. Wraith learns of the attack and marks Travis as a target, performing a brutal ritual sacrifice of a woman to seal his resolve and vow that the next offering will be Travis himself.

Marooned in a small urban sprawl, Travis fights his way through danger and manages to liberate three women. He wheels them back to an abandoned baseball stadium that he uses as a precarious hide-out, a stark sanctuary amid the ruin. Among the survivors is a woman who is gravely ill, prompting Travis to seek medical help. The group makes for a clinic run by Dr. Latimer [Stuart Whitman], hoping to stabilize the ill passenger and give the others a chance to live another day in this scorched country. The clinic is breached when a boy working for Wraith steals weapons from Travis’ car, and the escape is tense and uncertain. Inside the clinic, a grim discovery is made: Dr. Latimer reveals he has been infected by the latest flare, triggering fear and panic. The three women flee the clinic in a state of alarm, and Travis returns to find the clinic deserted save for Dr. Latimer, whom he is forced to shoot as the realization of the infection becomes undeniable.

Back at the baseball field, Travis and the three women—among them Zoe [Jennifer Jostyn]—reassess their dwindling chances. The decision is made to return to the compound and demand medical aid, hoping for a rescue that might save some of the people inside. But the return is grim: Wraith’s men have already breached the bunker, looted its armory, and slaughtered everyone within. Prescott frames the dire situation and reveals the stark option left to them. If they want any hope of stopping the slaughter, Travis must become the instrument of their salvation or annihilation. The plan is brutal but clear: detonate the bunker using the store’s explosives, a desperate gambit that would end the siege but wipe out all those still inside.

Reluctantly, Travis agrees, and with the aid of his female companions, he disables the perimeter, collects the explosives, and triggers the catastrophic blast that levels the facility. The explosion ends the immediate threat of Wraith’s siege, but it also seals a somber fate for many inside. With the immediate danger erased, Travis and his two remaining allies undertake a grueling trek across the scarred country, toward the pristine, untamed mountain lakes of Montana. They move forward together, seeking a hard-won refuge in a landscape that promises clean water, fresh air, and a future far from the scorched cities and the shadows of the past.
