Pak Belalang P. Ramlee is a lazy man who detests hard work, and his contrastively industrious son, Belalang Bat Latiff, sets the story in motion with a blend of wit and charm. When Belalang encounters two thieves, Badan Aziz Sattar and Nyawa S. Shamsudin, who have just stolen two cows, he outsmarts them and brings the cattle home. He then tells his father, prompting Pak Belalang to panic and insist they return the cows to their rightful owners. Belalang proposes a clever plan: they should visit the mayor’s house to identify the owners, while Pak Belalang poses as a mystic who can locate the cows. The ruse works, and the pair walk away with a reward, celebrating a small victory born of quick thinking and bold improvisation.

That success attracts trouble, however. The thieves strike again, this time stealing valuables from the royal palace. The mood shifts as Sultan Shahrul Nizam Ahmad Nisfu announces a handsome reward for anyone who can recover the loot. The mayor, impressed by Pak Belalang’s supposed psychic abilities, brings him to the palace. Caught off guard, Pak Belalang cannot bluff his way through, and the Sultan gives him three days to recover the items or face execution. In a moment of desperation, Pak Belalang hides in a cave at Bukit Tunggal, as Belalang had suggested. There he overhears Badan and Nyawa dividing the stolen loot. Disguising himself as a hunched-back elder, he frightens them away and retrieves the gold chest.

Meanwhile, Belalang is captured by palace officials and brought before the Sultan. Just as the monarch threatens him, Pak Belalang arrives, claiming to have found the stolen items. He urges the palace officials to crawl on all fours to retrieve the chest, a trick that amuses the Sultan when the gold is finally recovered. Grateful, the Sultan elevates Pak Belalang to the position of the “National Healer.” During the appointment ceremony, the princess Puteri Sri Bujur Sirih Hashimah Yon fakes a fainting spell to meet Pak Belalang, and the two secretly confess their love.

Not long after, the Kingdom of Masai arrives with a fleet, challenging the idea of a simple healer and proposing a war of wits between Masai’s National Healer and Pak Belalang. If Pak Belalang wins, Masai must concede its land; if he loses, the Kingdom of Beringin Rendang will be ceded to Masai. Pak Belalang, reluctant to face a real war of minds, sends Belalang to secure a boat to escape. But Belalang overhears the answers from Masai’s National Healer while hiding in their boat, providing the key to the next day’s challenge. Armed with this knowledge, Pak Belalang answers all the questions correctly and secures victory for his side. The Masai ruler, pressing for a bonus challenge, finds himself thwarted when Pak Belalang’s despairing cry for his son’s name accidentally reveals the correct path only after an actual locust—belalang—appears, saving the kingdom from further peril.

Badan and Nyawa, now allied with the Sultan of Masai, descend further into mischief by kidnapping the princess. Pak Belalang faces a deadly threat if he cannot locate her, but a miraculous twist occurs when his blessed water reveals the princess’s location and exposes the culprits. He rescues the princess and thwarts their nefarious plot. In gratitude, the Sultan orders the marriage of Pak Belalang and the princess, sealing their future with a blend of ritual tradition and comic relief. The film closes on a light note, with Pak Belalang sharing a playful exchange with his son Belalang about not having his own room, a joke that lands alongside the tale’s wrap of triumph and affection.
