Mohanakrishnan, a young carpenter, and his close-knit circle of friends spend their days crafting and building, but their noise and mischief draw the ire of a neighborhood lyricist, Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri. When trouble erupts over a disturbance during a music composition, the group is arrested. Their savior comes in the form of Gopalan, the guru who pleads for mercy, and their release is secured. Kaithapram then directs Mohana Krishnan to seek better work and to learn Carnatic music under the auspices of Ravamavarma Thampuran, setting him on a path toward artistry and discipline. Mohana Krishnan discovers a new world of melody, while the temple town hums with the promise of opportunity and ambition.

At this new crossroads of life, Mohana Krishnan crosses paths with Sathyabhama, an 18-year-old schoolgirl who earns her living by making and selling pappadam. The moment he lays eyes on her, he is drawn in, and a quiet, consuming love begins to bloom. The temple town’s rhythms, the raptures of Carnatic study, and the lure of a forbidden romance begin to fuse, changing the cadence of Mohana Krishnan’s days. Sathyabhama becomes a central figure in his world, a beacon and a challenge all at once.

Under Ramavarma Thampuran’s guidance, Mohana Krishnan grows into the Keezhshanti, the temple’s sub-priest, while Ramappan, who is sick, cannot manage everything alone. The Thampuran’s magnetic presence draws people, especially the women of the locality, and the temple’s coffers begin to swell with the influx of offerings. Mohana Krishnan’s study of Carnatic music deepens, and his devotion to the temple—paired with his burgeoning affection for Sathyabhama—pulls him further into a life he hadn’t anticipated.

One night, Mohana Krishnan overhears unusual sounds inside the temple and discovers a candy wrapper in front of the deity, Lord Krishna. The mystery deepens when Sathyabhama slips into the temple at night to offer candy and prayers. Her relatives come looking for her, but she hides in the Sreekovil. She shares with him a painful truth: whenever her cousin Surendran visits her home, she has taken refuge in the temple because he has previously attempted to molest her. Mohana Krishnan promises to protect her, and she slips away for the night. He later tells Ramavarma of what he’s learned; the Thampuran decides not to seal off the temple’s entry, recognizing that Sathyabhama has little choice and treating her like a daughter in need of care. He even offers Mohana Krishnan money to return to his hometown with dignity, a decision that blurs lines between duty and desire.

Two days later, Mohana Krishnan returns, and the two lovers finally confess their feelings to one another within the sanctum of the temple. From then on, Sathyabhama makes nightly visits, lingering until dawn as their relationship deepens. But the town is watching, and a crowd learns of their nighttime companionship the following morning. Anger boils over as Ramappan confronts Mohana Krishnan, beating him and tearing his sacred thread, with the crowd pressing in and the police stepping in to separate the lovers at Ramavarma’s insistence. The lovers retreat to the Thampuran’s home, where Surendran—Sathyabhama’s troubling cousin—appears with a new, dangerous vendetta.

In a desperate bid to shield his beloved, Mohana Krishnan exchanges Bhama for his sister, hoping to buy time or avert disaster. Surendran seizes Bhama as they move, and Mohana Krishnan fights to rescue her as Surendran’s assault escalates. He is beaten to the ground, left to die near a cluster of stone idols, yet the sight of Bhama in danger rekindles his resolve. Summoning his strength, Mohana Krishnan rises to confront Surendran, ultimately besting him in a brutal struggle. The pair retreat into the temple’s shadows and take shelter within its sacred precincts.

Surendran storms the temple with a sword, intent on killing Mohana Krishnan and Bhama. The fight culminates in a fierce exchange where Mohana Krishnan defeats Surendran, but the victory comes at a steep price: he is arrested as the temple and the town reel from the turmoil. With the law closing in, Mohana Krishnan reassures Bhama that he will return after his confinement, vowing to endure whatever lies ahead for their future together.
