In the woods on the edge of a Welsh suburb, an axe murder is committed, and the killer discards his female victim’s body and the weapon in a nearby lake. The man, later revealed to be a hotel bellboy named Danny, is then summoned to the home of Mrs. Bramson, a wealthy widow, where his arrival is complicated by the revelation that her maid, Dora Parkoe, is pregnant by him.

Having won Mrs. Bramson’s trust, he moves into the house and presents himself as her son, taking on tasks around the estate, redecorating a room, and performing duties as a would-be butler. He also begins to woo Olivia Greyne, Mrs. Bramson’s daughter, while the tension of his double life simmers beneath the surface. In the quiet of his private chamber, a hatbox sits as a grim reminder of his true nature—the hatbox that contains the heads of his victims.

Across the property, the investigation unfolds as the police recover the headless body and the axe from the lake, a stark clue that borders the house. They press Danny for details about the victim, to which he claims the person frequented the hotel as a prostitute, a claim that casts doubt on the surface of his respectable persona. Dora, sensing the danger in the arrangement, uncovers the relationship between Danny and Olivia and rejects them both, adding a personal stake to the mounting tension.
