In the years before World War II, a young Jewish girl Hanna, Sirpa Lane, shares a fleeting, intimate moment with her German boyfriend in a sunlit field. As the war erupts, Hanna and her family are rounded up, and her mother, Margherita Horowitz, is killed while defending them. They are shipped to a concentration camp, where Hanna’s surviving relatives are gassed upon arrival, tearing at the last connections she has left.
That night, inside the claustrophobic barracks, Hanna and a female companion are subjected to a brutal assault by SS soldiers. The trauma is so overwhelming that her companion sacrifices herself by throwing her body onto an electrified fence, a moment that haunts Hanna as she is left to endure the horrors alone. The camp’s brutal routine continues, and Hanna is forced to work in the camp’s “love camp” section, where she toils to satisfy the demands of the SS guards and officers.
The commandant soon fixes his gaze on Hanna, turning a predatory attention into a personal, coercive relationship. Their dynamic is cruel and charged, marked by mutual cross-dressing and bondage that blurs the lines between power and dependence. This dangerous liaison opens a path to manipulation, control, and a twisted form of identity that the commandant tries to impose on Hanna.
With the promise of an Aryan identity, Hanna is placed in charge of a brothel that services Nazi officers, a position that heightens her precarious standing within the system of oppression surrounding her. The arc of Hanna’s life at the camp is mirrored by the searching efforts of her German boyfriend, who works within a Lebensborn program and believes she is dead, clinging to a thread of hope that she might still be alive somewhere beyond the wire.
When fate brings them together again, Hanna makes a startling choice: she refuses rescue and returns to the brothel to oversee a night for visiting SS Generals, staging a performance that asserts her agency within an environment designed to strip it away. During the event, she confronts the men with a bold act that changes the balance of power in a single astonishing moment.
As the guests are surprised by her courage, Hanna’s actions culminate in a dramatic, lethal confrontation. She shoots the Commandant and a visiting General, a symbolic turning point that marks the end of her shattered, defiant fight. In the aftermath, Hanna herself is gunned down, leaving a stark and devastating imprint on the world she inhabited for so long, a stark reminder of the collapse of humanity in the face of such unchecked cruelty.
