Nanami: The Inferno of First Love 1968

Nanami, Kuniko Ishii, a nude dancer, and her friend Shun, Akio Takahashi, who is still a virgin, rent a room in a love hotel. He cannot consummate the moment, but Nanami remains understanding, choosing patience over frustration as their night unfolds. They drift into quiet conversations that let them reflect on their pasts, sharing fragments of how they arrived at this room in Tokyo’s nightscape. Nanami explains she left Shizuoka for the big city, taking up dancing because her previous job didn’t pay enough to survive, while Shun opens up about a childhood shadow—he was left by his mother and has grown into a man who now works as a goldsmith in his stepfather’s workshop.

Ankokuji attempts to justify his interest as something born from a loveless marriage, suggesting that his attraction to Nanami is more about filling a void than about authentic affection. Nanami, however, later encounters him with a seemingly ordinary family life—an image of harmony that clashes with the earlier, unsettling dynamics she had witnessed. The encounter leaves her shaken and disappointed, caught between the allure of money, fame, and a partner’s complicity in a cruel social game, and the desire for something more sincere and stable.

Despite the tension and danger, Nanami and Shun press forward with their relationship, continuing to see each other and arranging another appointment in the same hotel room where their confidences had first deepened. Their bond is tested as the outside world intrudes with threats, manipulation, and the lure of a night that can never fully be contained within the walls of a room.

The danger finally closes in when Shun is intercepted on his way to the hotel by Ankokuji’s former red-light district associates. They press him to reveal Nanami’s whereabouts, a confrontation that forces him to flee. The pursuit ends in tragedy as Shun is fatally struck by a car, a sudden, devastating turn that shatters Nanami’s fragile sense of safety and control. In the aftermath, Nanami waits in the hotel apartment, the sounds of the street leaking through the walls. She hears voices outside, and when she opens the window, she confronts the stark, heartbreaking sight of Shun’s body lying among the passers-by—the harsh clarity of mortality and the fragile line between longing and loss.
