From the moment he was six, Max wanted to die. He tried shooting himself, hanging himself, and even throwing himself out of a window, but somehow he always survived. Exasperated, his parents commit him to a mental institution, where miraculously he discovers something worth living for: Grace, a wild patient whose death wish is even stronger than his. Together they hatch a bold, desperate plan to marry, break out, and start over beyond the loony bin.

Max believes Grace can be saved by visiting her mother, Sheila, but first he must keep Grace alive long enough to reach her. Grace fights against despair, attempting an overdose on pills, stepping in front of a truck, and leaping from a bridge, and each narrow rescue by Max tightens their unusual bond.
