Ching, Charlene Choi, a compulsive gambler, starts betting to support herself and her brother after their mother’s death, but she quickly loses everything in an underground casino. In a moment of desperation, she attempts a drastic act by leaping into traffic, only to be rescued by a passerby named Jing, Louis Cheung. The two fall in love and begin dating, but Jing quickly reveals a deep aversion to gambling: he even calls the police when he sees schoolkids betting on a basketball court. To protect what they have, Ching keeps her gambling habit hidden from Jing, even after they marry.

After their wedding, Ching struggles to rein in her compulsions and secretly sneaks away to gamble again, even while she’s taking Jing’s grandfather out for his daily exercise. Guilt gnaws at her, and she reaches out to a hotline, attempting to quit by joining an anti-gambling therapy session. At roughly the same time, Jing’s younger sister Ying meets Ian, a Chinese-Korean playboy who has wealth and charm. Ian, Tommy Chu Pak-Hong, initially puts Ying off, but she reassesses him when she learns he is a millionaire. Ying starts dating Ian, and they eventually visit an underground casino he operates, where they win a large sum by betting against an unlucky gambler.

Meanwhile, Ching’s resolve falters: she fails her final therapy test and relapses into gambling. One night, Jing’s grandfather goes missing, sending the family into a frantic search. In the midst of the turmoil, Ching mistakenly follows someone she believes is her grandfather into a mahjong parlor. When she realizes her mistake and exits, she runs into Jing, who finds the whole episode suspicious. He confides in the anti-gambling therapist, revealing that he has been posing as a hotline operator to steer Ching toward therapy. The therapist informs Jing that Ching has indeed failed the test and shows him videos of her returning to gambling.

The next day, Jing confronts Ching, scolding her for her addiction and telling her to leave their home. Desperate, Ching goes to stay with her brother Ming, Stanley Yau, who locks her in to help her quit. Ying expresses disappointment in Jing’s handling of Ching, and she reveals that Jing himself was once a pathological gambler who managed to overcome it with the support of his family. Ying later uncovers that Ian has been unfaithful with her best friend, and she learns that Ian is actually a classmate of Jing’s—a rivalry that stretches back to their school days. Ian’s motive becomes clear: he’s pursuing Ying to exact revenge, and he lashes out by throwing casino chips at her and breaking up with her.

Heartbroken, Ying drowns her sorrows at Ming’s bar, where Ming himself opens up about his own feelings for her. In a turn of grace, Jing visits Ching at Ming’s urging, and the two begin to mend what was frayed between them, sharing their personal struggles and choosing to rebuild trust. Yet danger looms: Ian calls with a chilling demand—he has kidnapped Ying and Ming after they returned to his casino and risked everything. Even though Ching has fought hard to stay away from gambling, she and Jing agree to enter Ian’s casino and participate in a final gamble, hoping to secure the hostages’ release.

Ching outplays Ian, turning the tables on the casino boss just as the police arrive, having been alerted by Jing. Ian is arrested, and a sense of closure washes over the family. The film closes on a warm note as Ching, Jing, Ying, Ming, and the rest of the family gather for a New Year meal, sharing a small, cheerful tradition of gambling a little for fun—an acknowledgment of how far they’ve come and a cautious optimism for the future.
