Achchappa, a dedicated jawan in the British Indian Army during World War II, is wounded in the Burma theater and cared for by a nurse from his own Karnataka homeland, Annapurna. The two officers fall in love and marry after the war, while his aging in‑laws—especially the father‑in‑law, Belliappa, who has retired as a havaldar—welcome the new family with quiet warmth. Their union brings a son, Veeraraju, into the world, but a devastating childbirth complication requires Annapurna to have her uterus removed, leaving her unable to bear more children. The bond between husband and wife deepens amid the shadow of global conflict, and a fragile, hopeful future appears within reach.
In 1952, Achchappa is stationed in Korea and then reassigned to India’s Rajasthan. After years apart, the family travels to the desert to reunite with him, hopeful for a quiet life together. An airstrike robs them of their young son, as Veeraraju dies before his father can meet him. The couple grieves deeply, and Annapurna returns to the army as a nurse. Despite her longing for another child, Achchappa refuses to remarry, choosing fidelity over necessity. They keep the heartache of their loss hidden from their aging parents, clinging to each other and the memory of their boy.
As time passes, Achchappa rises to the rank of Major and takes on a role training young cadets at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. When his elderly parents finally visit, guilt and sorrow surface as Annapurna confesses the truth about their son’s death. The revelation shocks the family, and Achchappa’s ailing mother dies from the strain. The weight of this truth reverberates through the household, testing the couple’s resolve and their devotion to one another.
A new war erupts, pushing Achchappa back onto the front lines along India’s snow‑bound borders. He and his troops are captured and tortured as the enemy probes for a military secret they will not divulge. Among his men is a young soldier, Mohan, whom Achchappa treats with the tenderness of a father. The two manage a perilous escape back into Indian territory, but both are mortally wounded. Mohan dies in a military hospital, and, in his final moments, reveals to Annapurna that her husband died steadfastly safeguarding secrets and shielding his comrades. Achchappa is laid to rest with a state funeral, while Annapurna’s happiness fractures under the weight of grief, sending her toward a fragile, brittle sanity that never fully returns.
