Zu is a newly sober woman who has become the sole guardian of her teenage, nonverbal autistic half-sister Music after their grandmother, Millie, dies and leaves Music in their care. Struggling with unemployment, Zu scrapes by by dealing drugs with the help of her friend Rudy, all while clinging to a dream of leaving for Costa Rica. The pair’s fragile routine is upended when Music has a devastating meltdown one morning—Zu cannot braid her hair, and Music’s distress feels like a crisis they must endure together. Their neighbor, Ebo, steps in to calm Music, and a cautious friendship blooms between Zu and Ebo as he shares that he is a boxer who also teaches boxing to kids.

As the bond deepens, Zu begins to trust Ebo with more of Music’s world, and she finds herself learning to care for Music in new, patient ways. Yet the pressure to fund their shared life remains, and Zu clings to her drug sale routine as a means to pursue a better future, even as Ebo’s life reveals its own complications. Ebo opens up about the pain of his past—his ex-wife left him for his brother—and Zu promises to stand by him at his brother’s wedding, a moment that hints at a possible future beyond survival.

Rudy pressures Zu further by asking her to deliver HIV medication to a buyer, a move that is later revealed to be Ebo himself. During a routine walk with Music, Zu becomes distracted, and Music suffers a bee sting, triggering a serious allergic reaction that lands her in the hospital. Zu cannot cover the treatment and realizes her bag—containing drugs meant for a pop star—was left in the park. Consumed by fear and desperation, Zu relapses, turning to alcohol and a tense confrontation with a neighbor of Ebo. The situation escalates to a police report, and Zu confesses to Ebo that she is on probation.

That same night, Felix—a neighbor boy who dislikes boxing but is pushed into it by his father—faces a grim turn when his father’s actions lead to Felix’s death. In the aftermath, Ebo attends his brother’s wedding alone, while Zu wrestles with the feeling of not wanting to abandon Music at an adoption center. The trio eventually joins the wedding, and a poignant moment follows as Zu and Ebo share a kiss on stage while Ebo accompanies Music’s impromptu performance on the piano. Music interrupts with her own singing, signaling that she will not be sidelined but instead will be part of their evolving life together.

In the quiet aftermath, the trio remains connected, preparing Music’s breakfast and continuing to navigate their responsibilities with care. A new support dog for Music arrives, a thoughtful gift connected to Felix, who had arranged it before his death, underscoring how their losses and loyalties braid together into this still-new family. Throughout, the film maintains a grounded, empathetic lens on resilience, duty, and the surprising ways love can form when protection and companionship align with hope for a better future.
