The film opens with a brisk montage of vintage black-and-white clips promoting tourism in Mexico City, then shifts to a dazzling, color-saturated portrait of the modern capital.

But that is not the Mexico City of today.

An older couple in a gated home is shown as the husband heads out to work, only to be kidnapped in a bold street ploy. News reports soon reveal that the president’s doctor has also been kidnapped and later murdered in a move by political opponents aiming to demonstrate that even high-ranking officials can’t be protected from the corruption within the police forces.

Mitch Cobb, Stacy Edwards, and her two children Maggie and Max arrive in the city on their way to Oaxaca. Mitch, torn by a painful past, recounts to her brother Sam the moment she witnessed her husband kissing his lover on the street while she was driving with the kids after school. This painful confession unfolds against a tense travel plan: Mitch’s marriage fallout, Sam’s own turmoil, and a shared motive to escape into the journey toward a fresh start.

The next morning, Sam fails to return to the hotel. Mitch mounts a frantic search, met with cool dismissiveness from hotel staff and a neutral attitude from Ambassador Mills, Robert Patrick, who introduces her to the city police chief at the consulate and politely, but firmly, warns against inviting the local police into the case. Mitch recalls Pedro, the taxi driver who offers to help for $100 a day, and together they begin tracing Sam’s last movements. They locate the bar where Sam was last seen and, through a tense pursuit, identify the killer as a gang lord from the bar. The driver appears wearing Sam’s orange baseball cap, and they recover the missing camera, confirming they’ve found the right man.

After Mitch asserts herself under threat, she regains control and is allowed to step back from immediate danger. Yet the danger intensifies when an intruder at the hotel knocks her unconscious and steals the developing film. The Ambassador’s curiosity grows, since the doctor’s shooting happened behind the same bar where Sam disappeared. The gang lord swears they beat him in a panic, but leaves him alive.

Mitch later explains to the consul that she already sent the film to be developed, and Pedro helps her retrieve the photographs. He drops her at the consul’s safe house, where they witness the doctor’s execution from the bathroom window of the same bar, captured in Sam’s photos. A flashback sequence follows, revealing Sam’s perspective as events spiral out of control. Within minutes, the safe house is besieged by men, and the Ambassador and everyone else are killed except Mitch, who hides in a bathroom with the photos and ultimately arms herself with a gun.

Seeking sanctuary, Mitch finds cover in a church, and Pedro volunteers to drive her toward the Texas border. As they talk, he gently encourages her to consider building a new family and future for herself. About ten kilometers from the border, a Mexico City police car pulls them over. Mitch disarms the danger by shooting the officer with the gun she’s taken at the safe house, and Pedro guides her to the border crossing, where she is briefly detained in a tense standoff between Mexican and American guards. She is eventually exonerated when the church photos—now in authorities’ hands—reveal the doctor’s execution by a known assassin.

A final, hopeful image shows Mitch and Sam’s young son on a sunlit beach. Mitch takes photos as he hands her the camera, and he captures a candid, smiling portrait of his mother in the bright light of the shore. The film ends on this quiet note of resilience and the possibility of a new life she can build for her and her family.
