As Max Keeble, portrayed by Alex D. Linz, embarks on his first day of middle school, he unwittingly lands in the crosshairs of the despotic principal, Elliot T. Jindrake. Max also encounters a trio of notorious bullies: Troy McGinty, Dobbs, and the sinister Evil Ice Cream Man. Adding to the chaos, Max learns that an animal shelter adjacent to the school is on the verge of closure, thanks to Jindrake’s extravagant scheme to construct a lavish football stadium.
Upon learning from his father, Donald (played by Larry Miller), that the family will be relocating to Chicago, Max perceives a golden opportunity to retaliate against his aggressors. Alongside his fellow misfits, Robe and Megan, he devises an array of intricate pranks aimed at terrorizing Troy, inciting discord between Dobbs and the Evil Ice Cream Man, and thwarting Jindrake’s ambitions of becoming superintendent. His grand plan includes everything from blasting the theme song of MacGoogles in Troy’s ears to stealing Dobbs’s handheld game, and even interfering with the Evil Ice Cream Man’s refrigerating system. Additionally, Max targets Jindrake directly by slipping animal pheromones into his breath spray and initiating a wild cafeteria food fight that leaves Superintendent Bobby “Crazy Legs” Knebworth utterly astounded.
As Max’s playful schemes unfold, he grapples with the exhilaration of evading consequences, juxtaposed with the remorse of harming those around him. Tensions rise with Robe and Megan, particularly when Max chooses a milkshake celebration with his crush, Jenna, over their farewell party. His internal struggle intensifies when Robe confronts him about his feelings for Megan, leaving Max in a state of regret and solitude.
Compounding his troubles, Max receives devastating news: his father has decided to start his own business, quashing their plans to move to Chicago. The realization of his actions begins to weigh heavily on him, as he recognizes the impact of his antics on his classmates.
In a climactic showdown, Max stands against Jindrake, Troy, and Dobbs, rallying his fellow students to aid him in subduing his foes, ultimately banishing them to a dumpster and rendering their malicious schemes ineffectual. His relentless efforts lead to Jindrake’s undoing, as he is finally held accountable for his disgraceful conduct, including misappropriating school funds for his personal stadium project. Faced with impending criminal charges, Jindrake’s reign ends, while Max enjoys the sweet taste of victory.
With the turmoil subsiding, Max sets out on a fresh journey, riding his bicycle through the neighborhood, delivering newspapers and spreading a sense of calm. Yet, tranquility is short-lived as the malevolent Evil Ice Cream Man resurfaces, eager to stir trouble once again in Max’s life. The scene is primed for yet another exhilarating confrontation, as our hero steels himself to face this chilling adversary anew.
