The Movie Echo Score

62

Overall, Mardaani 2 presents a gripping premise that is tempered by uneven execution and superficial treatment of its themes. The film benefits from committed performances and a taut cat-and-mouse structure that delivers moments of genuine suspense. Nevertheless, the script’s reliance on formulaic twists and blunt thematic flourishes disrupts narrative flow. The gender-issue messaging feels forceful rather than nuanced, and pacing intermittently stalls. In sum, the film offers engaging highlights but does not fully cohere as a satisfying thriller.

Shivani Shivaji Roy, played by Rani Mukherjee, is a resolute policewoman on a mission to track down a ruthless young man who has been terrorizing women through a series of heinous sexual assaults and murders. This predator, Shiv “Sunny” Prasad Yadav, portrayed by Vishal Jethwa, is a troubled juvenile with a penchant for abducting and assaulting vulnerable “Nackhchari girls.” The tale intensifies after his latest victim, Latika, is found dead; this prompts Shivani to take charge of the case, joining forces with Officer Brij Shekhawat, played by Sumit Nijhawan, to unravel the brutality behind the crimes.

As the investigation unfolds, the tension escalates when a politician named Panditji, played by Prasanna Ketkar, hires Shiv to eliminate a journalist, Kamal Parihar, who is unraveling his secrets. Observing Shivani’s determination to capture the rapist, Shiv decides to send a chilling message by breaking into her home, stealing her Saree, and using it to strangle Kamal, all while orchestrating a complex scheme to mislead the police regarding the circumstances of the murders.

The plot thickens further when Shivani finds herself dealing with multiple layers of deceit and violence. After the murder of an eyewitness she had brought in for a sketch, Shivani is transferred from her position, facing a grim 48-hour deadline to solve the case. Undeterred, she reapproaches the investigation to uncover the real power behind the scenes by tracking down who ordered the journalist’s death, ultimately leading her to Viplaw Beniwal, portrayed by Sunny Hinduja.

As tensions mount, Shiv threatens Shivani by kidnapping Panditji’s granddaughter, creating a public spectacle and demanding an apology from her through social media. Despite the distractions and emotional turmoil, Shivani’s unyielding spirit shines through as she utilizes CCTV footage to track him down, managing to rescue the girl just in time.

Complications escalate with Shiv making a dangerous agreement to assassinate his political opponent, Sunanda, who is played by Richa Meena. Utilizing every ounce of wit and resolve, Shivani does not fall for the traps set by Shiv and instead forges ahead with her pursuit.

In a harrowing climax, Shiv holds not just Sunanda but also her daughter hostage while trying to evade capture. However, the community rallies around Shivani as she faces off against Shiv. In a stunning display of bravery, she encourages the captive women to reclaim their power, turning the tide against their captor in a collective act of defiance. The entire neighborhood bands together, showcasing the unbreakable spirit of unity in the face of evil.
