Shiva More, portrayed by Meezaan Jafri, is an unemployed Marathi youth who struggles to find work while navigating the final year of his BA and a life in a crowded chawl in Mumbai. His routine is disrupted when during a local cricket match a sharp-eyed local politician named Sawant, [Sameer Dharmadhikari], spots him and sees an opportunity to push his anti-migration, Maharashtrian-first agenda. Sawant recruits Shiva and his friends into his party, tasking them with keeping North Indian migrants out of their city in an effort to safeguard regional interests. The move places Shiva in a risky, political world far from his earlier ambitions, framing his future with new loyalty and pressure.

Into this tense atmosphere enters Astha Tripathi, played by [Sharmin Segal], a young woman who has just moved from a grand bungalow to the same chawl with her family. Astha’s mother Rajni, [Sonal Jha], and father Umashankar, [Sanjay Gurbaxani], along with her brother Deepu, reveal a family grappling with financial strain after Umashankar’s investments faltered. The arrival of Astha stirs friction in the close-knit community, and Shiva, along with his friends, finds himself clashing with her at first. Yet, when Astha confronts him alone one night and challenges him to demonstrate his worth, Shiva’s response is unexpectedly poised, sparking a hesitant, complicated conversation between them. As their paths begin to cross more often, a tentative bond forms, especially after Shiva intervenes when Aditya—the man Astha has been promised to marry—employs goons to intimidate him. In their interactions, Astha’s view of Shiva softens, and she starts to see a different side of him beyond the political caricature she first learned about.

Their growing rapport intensifies during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, a time that seems to illuminate their connection. Shiva soon falls deeply in love with Astha and tries to confess his feelings more than once. Their relationship begins to shift the balance of loyalties around them: Shiva’s anger at Aditya’s influence and Astha’s evolving feelings pull them toward a shared future rather than the bitter distance of their early days. The moment of trust deepens when Astha begins tutoring Shiva’s sister, strengthening the sense that their lives are crossing in meaningful, if fragile, ways. Yet the world outside them remains volatile; a brutal incident in which Shiva is mistaken for attempting to molest Astha leaves him humiliated before the public, and the event strains their plans and trust.

Even so, Astha’s posture softens as she recognizes Shiva’s restraint and honest intentions, and the two step back from confrontation to reframe their expectations. Shiva eventually parts ways with Sawant and his faction, choosing a path he believes can lead to a steadier, more legitimate future. In a moment of quiet resolve, Astha dedicates a day to being with him, and together they visit the Siddhivinayak Temple while her parents are away, a trip that deepens their bond before consequences pull them apart again. When her parents return, they collide again as they attempt to keep the couple apart, but Astha promises that she will try to persuade them if Shiva can top his exams.

The pressures pile on during the exam that becomes a turning point for Shiva. He is framed for cheating and ends up slapping the proctor in a desperate bid to prove his innocence. The fallout is swift: arrest follows, and only the intervention of his worried parents and Astha helps him secure bail. That same night, Astha’s parents arrange a dinner date with Aditya, a distraction that shocks Shiva and leads to a private diary entry from Astha in which she confesses her love for him. In a bid to secure a future for their relationship, Astha introduces Shiva to a successful stock broker who agrees to hire him. Although Shiva is initially reluctant to climb the ladder from the bottom, Astha’s persuasion and the broker’s support push him to accept. He even earns his first paycheck, and in time he reconciles with his parents, sensing that a new chapter is opening.

Yet happiness remains fragile. Astha’s engagement to Aditya unsettles Shiva, and when he discovers this, he bolts in a fit of anger. Astha, in turn, chooses to move out of the chawl, and the lovers are left to navigate a painful separation. Shiva tracks Astha down and the two meet again, choosing to spend a night together and share the truth of their feelings. Astha reveals that she will marry someone else, but she urges him to stay by her side nonetheless. The next day, a moment of forgotten keys leads to tragedy: Astha is struck by a truck while walking back to her friend’s house, and Shiva is knocked down by a passing car while attempting to rescue her. Astha dies, and Shiva survives but is left shattered, his guilt and grief pushing him toward a fragile mental state.

Back at Shiva’s home, Rajni leaves Astha’s diary, a last testament of the love that defined their relationship. Reading it, Shiva is flooded with memories and longing, a reminder that the dream of being with Astha remains just out of reach. The narrative then shifts to the present, where a now-successful trader revisits the diary and imagines Astha by his side, an endless companionship that also hints at his ongoing instability. The film closes on this melancholy note, underscoring how a single, transformative love can endure in memory even as life continues to move forward.
